I was just curious if anyone has had any negative side effects from their surgery. I hear a lot of good things and would like to hear first hand experiences and have an idea of the kind of negative consequences, other than the most common ones listed online, I could be putting myself at risk for.

I do have a consult appoint set for the 14th.

Hi there

i had sleeve. No previous GERD before, but had long term issues after , so converted to bypass. So two surgeries instead of one.

I have seen online advice not to have sleeve if you already have GERD, but never info that sleeve can cause serious GERD. I used to wake up in night with acid filling my nose and throat. Really horrid and not good Healthwise

before First surgery I had no gallstones. 4 years later, had to have gall bladder out with the most ridiculous number of stones largely because of the fast weight loss

but no life threatening issues . I think like a lot of things, statistics are based on historic info. In reality, surgery is constantly improving as surgeons gain experience. Check your surgeons record is my best advice

I've had my gallbladder removed already, so I won't have to worry that at least. I already take medication for GERD, so that has been a cause for concern in my decision, but I'm more worried about the possibility of ulcers.

I miss fried chicken, mac and cheese and also I burp a lot. Just the less serious side of the cons.

I miss Pizza!
But in all seriousness...

Having to take Vitamins which can be expensive. I was a blood donor before surgery so I take bariatric specific vitamins with Iron in hopes to start up again. I used to only spend $15 a month on vitamins. Now it's double that.

I'm tired. I used to be up early and to bed late. Although this could be because I'm not getting any younger now that I think about it lol.

Gas sucks. I'm thinking the extra room in our natural stomach is for gas.

I took two pills plus a Vitamin daily before surgery. Now I take 5 pills and 4 vitamins a day. That takes a toll mentally. It's not forever, but hard now.

For me , a con is the amount of food I'm able to eat... I didn't want to eat the large portions I was eating but now I'm eating less than my toddlers. And my life still revolves around food now instead of thinking about what I want to eat, I'm thinking about what I can't eat.

I would agree with a few others. I took pills before surgery and now I take double that due to Vitamins and Calcium. It’s totally worth it but sometimes if I’m not thinking I’ll take some on an empty stomach and have burning pain for the next hour.

I’d also say Protein Powder is expensive or the ready to drink Protein, which is common to be using in the early post op. I still use protein powder and grumble about the cost. But I do save in my general grocery bill just because I don’t eat much :)

I really have had no issues after gastric bypass. Eating slow and in small amounts is hardest part for me. I had no pain and easily independent the next day... back to work in about a week just to acclimate to eating patterns

I love being able to eat less than my 4 and 5 year old lol

Hum I wouldn’t say any of the cons would have stopped me from having surgery. I would do it all over again. Here are some cons I have experienced. I’m 17 days post op. 1- I hate eating. Takes forever to eat and if you don’t eat slow and chew good, it hurts going down. 2- getting all the Water in is a challenge and stressful for me. 3-No foods appeal to me anymore ( I guess that could be a good thing). 4- I hate taking Vitamins. I liked them before the surgery now I hate how they taste. Those are my cons so far but all of these complaints will get better with time. No regrets!

I haven't had any major complications, but there are definitely mental aspects to post-surgery life that I didn't really think about.

First, you can't overeat - even if you have the worst day ever, you can't turn to food for comfort. Is that a con? Not really, but it does mean you have to find new ways to deal with your issues. Prepare yourself.

Second, there are times that you are going to be pissed off that you can't eat what others are eating or as much as they are eating. I didn't expect that at all. You just have to change your way of thinking!

You can't take a break from your new lifestyle. You will get sick and/or potentially cause harm to yourself if you don't follow your diet guidelines. This is 100% commitment for the rest of your life. I'm not saying you'll never eat normal foods, but you have to be committed to eating nutritious foods in the right quantities. Make sure you are ready for that before you take the plunge.

I didn't have any major food issues before surgery . . . I just neglected myself for too long, which led to my weight gain. That being said, the mental aspects have still affected me from time to time. They are all manageable, but I definitely think this is more of a head game than people realize before surgery.

Good luck with your decision! Even with all of the above, I do NOT regret my decision. I feel better than I have felt in years, and I'm really happy I went through with my surgery!!

It's great you are researching your decision. Your surgeon's office should provide you with good information on risks.

Cons:

  • The sounds that come from my intestines is ridiculous, extremely embarrassing, and untimely
  • I forget to eat slowly; otherwise, I'm down for about an hour or two
  • Weakness due to lack of Protein because it is hard to get it all in

Best wish to you.

I was so worried about it because I too, had GERD. It was so bad is caused EOE. After my surgery, it actually went away! I’m off all my meds for the last 5 weeks and have had zero issues.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
