Anyone out there that has started close to 400 pounds??

Recommended Posts

So I'm currently at 411 down from my highest of 428... I'm in the final stages of dealing with the nutritionist, which I go back on the 16th, but I'm curious about anyone out there that started close to 400 pounds and got the sleeve and where are you now? Will I eventually need to get a bypass as well or can I lose it all just with a sleeve... My doctor told me yes I can just with the sleeve but keep the bypass on the back burner in case I need it later on... I'm 5'6 and I'm not looking to be 125 pounds but do you think it's obtainable to get down to like 180?? Thoughts anyone....

I started my journey at 397 pounds. I lost 99 pounds during my six month insurance-required pre-op diet program, weighing 298 on the day of surgery (September 28, 2016).

I met my goal of 180 pounds on October 2, 2017, 1 year and 4 days post-op. I currently weigh 173 pounds.

The surgery helped me, yes, but I have followed a Keto way of eating since the first day of my six month pre-op diet program. I eat less than 25 grams of carbs per day and keep my calories below 2000. I plan to continue to eat that way long term. That's what has helped me to achieve my goals.

Good luck!

I’m a bypass patient but I’m going to answer because I thought it was interesting that I was the only person at my preoperative surgical class getting a bypass instead of a sleeve. I was not the largest there either.

My high weight was 389. My surgery weight 12/2/18 was 369. My current weight is 326.

I believe any goal is obtainable with dedication to the proper diet and exercise after either procedure. There are plenty of posts on here from folks that have gained weight with improper eating habits that had sleeves and bypasses both.

I mainly chose a bypass because my starting BMI was over 50. My surgeon felt either procedure would work for me long term and did not pressure me either way.

I weighed 430lbs on Christmas when I started the liquid pre-op diet. That got me down to 410 the day of surgery on January 8th (I had gastric sleeve). I'm down to 384 now 2/2/18. This is the first time in a long time that I've been below 400 and I'm feeling great. I went from taking 3 blood pressure meds and 4 diabetes meds and I'm off all of them. Having this surgery was the best thing I ever did. I hope your experience is as good as the one I've had so far.

My doctor was open to either because I am pretty healthy than my weight but I just chose to do the sleeve and use the bypass as a backup if I need it later... I'm giving it all with the sleeve... Great job... Keep it up....

I started at 375, I'm 5'1". I lost about 120 lbs doing a liquid diet. I was about 250 on my surgery date and I am currently a little under 150. I lost about 100 lbs in 16 months but I went down 15 sizes and built a lot of muscle. I'm currently a size 8. And that's WITH all my extra skin. lol! I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great job! How did you fair overall with the surgery? Any complications because of size? Any words of advice? Keep up the great work!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
