Great thread. Thought it ought to be in RNR at first but after reading it through I think this is the perfect place for it!

2+ years out and my MIL still keeps asking when I'm going to have it removed so I can start eating healthy again (like her). This coming from a woman I always thought was thin in her size 12 jeans (me in size 24-26). Now I'm a size 10 and still shrinking she's still a 12 (which btw I'm not insulting that size, I still think she looks thin) but she has high BP and her Cholesterol is over 300! Can anyone tell me why she honestly thinks she is the one eating more healthy?

Wow, I seriously cannot believe the utter lack of tact some people have!! I guess I am just lucky that I have yet to receive ignorant comments from anyone I have told (who knows what they say behind my back though!), but from what everyone here has said, it's probably just a matter of time before someone says something really stupid to me. The good part is that I've had plenty of time to come up with smart and/or smart-ass replies!!

WOW...how frustrating. I do feel I don't eat enough Fiber since I can't tolerate lettuce right now, but overall I have a very healthy diet, I would assume due to your success you do too, can't they see that? sheeshh

Nothing negative to report. Most people are supportive but fairly ignorant about the band. I suspect that will change -- my surgeon's office specialized in GB for a looooong time. They were pioneers. But now they are doing more lap bands than GBs.

I haven't had any negative comments but a funny situation presented itself last week. I am attending massage therapy school and last week we learned abdomen massage. Since the students work on each other I thought I had better tell the student working on me that she might feel a strange object in my stomach. My port, although not visible, is very easy to feel.

Well, when the other students heard that they all came running over to feel my port. There I am, laying on the table with my stomach exposed and 8 students rubbing it. It was pretty funny.

I have a fiber tip for you from Dr Ox (love that guy). I drink Protein shakes for Breakfast with a couple of Tbsp of Psyllium Husk in it. I buy it at the health food store in bulk, very cheap and an easy way to add fiber. I also add a couple of Tbsp of Flax Seed Oil. It keeps things moving.

Cheers

Flaxseed oil, huh? Are you trying out for the San Francisco Giants? Better watch out, that flaxseed oil will make your head grow by a full hat size!! :( *kidding* *It's a Barry Bonds reference*

I told my grandma after the fact (through email) and the first time she saw me (a week after surgery and down 20 pounds total) looked me up and down as if to see if I had lost and then said "so, you think this is gonna work?" Would I have paid $15,000 if I didn't think so? Obviously it already has. When was the las time you lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks? Part of this was from the pre-op diet of course, which I would not have done were I not getting the band. DUH

I'm still cracking up about Laura's grandma pushing her port to "inflate" the band. If only we could tighten our bands with the simple push of a button. LOL

lmao...

ive decided that all things aside, there is a remote control in my dr's office that he lets the interns play with which explains why one day you can eat an egg and the next day you cant. :(

I hear ya about trying to explain to people. They still look at mr like i'm crazy. I even start to get a little ticked. Even trying to explain to my sistah-friend, she still was looking at me like i was crazy. then when all fails, i start to sound like i don't know what i'm talking about and then the conversation changes. (hee-hee) it works every time!!

From my friend- I don't understand why people need a rubberband to stop them from eating.

My cousins- So you are starving yourself?

You are just doing this to get a boyfriend.

From my aunt- I hope you don't look like star jones when you finish.

Lmao I get that all the time too!

I also hear, "ohh you're too young!"

Or "just go on one more diet," "your taking the easy way out"

Or my fav "stop being lazy and just exercise!" (that ones from my older skinny brother hahah)

I do excerise, and I am active. Some people are ignorant

Well good luck to everyone!

Don't let them get you down or break your spirits!

from all people the nutritionist at the gym I just joined.

1. So, when are you going to have it removed?

2. My girlfriend used to be overweight. Everyone told her to get the band, and I told her if she did I wouldn't be her boyfriend anymore. Now she has lost 50 pounds on her own (she still has about another 125 to go).

That's nice...coerce the girl into losing weight because she thinks she might lose the guy she "loves." That's a wonderful relationship...not!! Now, what happens when they break up? I'd not give good odds the weight loss continues.

This yahoo is going to give me advice? Nope.

I believe part of the problem explaining to the clueless, is that they have no concept of what it is to be controlled by the Eating Dragons that take over our lives.

I feel sometimes like the Great Orangutang of Gorging Myself Endlessly, has finally been put on retirement pension and made to shuffle off down the hall to some other activity.

Isn't that the truth?!! Sometimes I'm just so outrageously happy to be rid of that whole side of me!!

The wildest thing said to me was by the brother, the Dr. of Pharmacy, who upon learning I lost 14 pounds on the pre-op liquid diet, said "Now you don't have to have the surgery! Just keep on with that!!

It's so great that all of you know exactly where we are coming from--the outside world has absolutely NO IDEA what obesity really is:rolleyesl!

Uhghh!!! My DH this morning saw my morning Protein shake (approx 16 oz) and asked "Shouldn't that be too much for you to drink if you are properly adjusted?" Come on the band is suppose to slow solids from going through not liquids. Does he think I'm suppose to starve myself?

OK yes I'm just coming off a long period of being filled too tight where I'd get heartburn and reflux just from taking a small drink but that was NOT normal.

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
