Recommended Posts

I am 11 days post op. This wked we were invited out to Breakfast which we did not go.. we came up w. A an excuse but of course l felt guilty..

I am not really eating at this point yet. Starting to introduce mushy food. Focusing on my fluids and Protein shakes.. I have another two wks I believe when I will be able to start eating more foods..

I am starting to feel bad for my husband. I told him we can go out .. we will just go somewhere where I can order a Soup or a meal w. My son who is 3 and feed him and have like mashed potatoes or something..

So when did u all have your first dining out experience after surgery??

I think you can be successful at eating out with a bit of a shift in perspective. I've made eating out so much more about being social than actually eating. My focus used to be all about the food and how fast I can shove it down my throat. Now it's about connecting and catching up with my company. I too have a 3 year old - you can focus on him and let hubby eat peacefully.

So I don't feel awkward or get questioned by the waitstaff, I order a Water - that I don't drink unless conversation goes 40 minutes beyond eating. I order small and appropriate. And (for the first time ever) I happily share. My family loves me for this.

If you're not able to order exactly what you need or think you should have - make the best choices you can and supplement with a Protein Shake after you leave.

Stay social! You can do this!

I had my best friend's birthday during my liquid diet phase, and we always go out and grab dinner somewhere.

We went to Panera's and I ordered their light chicken Soup, and I just drank the broth. Was just glad to be out with my friend:)

I have strategies for most restaurants now.

At McDonalds, I eat half an egg McMuffin and a Decaf coffee with fat free milk.

At Applebees, I get the Chicken Mozzarella Caprese and eat less than a third of it and take the rest home in a box.

At my favorite steak house, I get sirloin tip cabobs, medium rare...and take at least half home.

At Panera's I'll now get light chicken soup, or a turkey avacado BLT half sandwich on sourdough. (and mostly eat the insides)

Thai food, I'll get chicken pad ped MILD....eat a third, bring it home.

There's always something on the menu that can work in a pinch. I also keep Protein Bars and Mio in my purse.

Some time last summer. I went to QDoba and had a shrimp salad. Didn't eat the entire thing but the dining out thing was successful. Didn't get myself sick. Lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
