please help, 2 days post op and miserable

Recommended Posts

I was supposed to have vgs surgery 1/24, but i was dehydrated and the surgery instead took place 1/26. I received fluids in the hospital and was appalled to learn, when I got back home, that I had gained FOURTEEN pounds in the hospital. I am so discouraged. I am very sore, the tylenol with codeine is not halping and I am gettting depressed that i havent had solid food for 10 days and wont for another 19 days.

Has anyone else gained 14 pounds in the hospital? I was on a liquid diet! I want to quit but im afraid of ripping open this stupid sleeve.

How frustrating! I didn't gain but I didn't lose much. Since you had excess Fluid, I'm guessing that all or most of the gained weight is "water" weight (fluid) and some is all of the air pumped into the abdomen to increase visibility of stomach during surgery. I'd be discouraged too. Trust me....this gain is likely to come off rapidly and will soon be behind you. Walking does help move the fluid and air (as you probably know). I'm sorry you feel so awful. There are better days ahead. :206_cat:

I'm day 3 post op and its starting to get better. I still feel so bloated and sore. Hoping for a better week and for the excess gas to be gone. I didn't go down until today and I'm sure there is more to come off more rapidly once my body regulates. I feel like I'm drinking too much but just getting in my 64 oz

Hang in there - I'm right there with you

It sounds like Water weight, which should come off quickly. At the pre-op class I attended they actually told us not to weigh ourselves in the days after surgery because gaining water weight is so common, and they didn't want us to get discouraged and think we weren't losing weight. Your body just needs a little more time to adjust. Don't give up.

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I am so depressed and ready to throw in the towel and eat a cheeseburger. I am trying to hold off one more day to see if any of the 14 pounds disappear

Speaking from personal experience, eating a cheeseburger and puking it back up is worse than not eating a cheeseburger. It gets better.

You probably picked up a lot of Water weight, especially if you were dehydrated going in. They pump you full of tons of Fluid during the surgery, which due to the trama gets stored in your body in different areas. It’ll take a week or more for it to come out, but then you’ll see a big difference.

Hang in there it gets easier.

THANKS, BUT after 12 days of not eating, i cant handle it taking a week or more to come off. i need to figure out a way to eat. this was a disasterous mistake.

Hey , sorry you are miserable but eating something before the doc says can make your staples come undone or worse. I’d call your surgeon to get some advice. Or if you have a nutritionist ?
I hope you feel better soon. Please don’t take my post as mean I just don’t want you hurting yourself.

Did you talk to a therapist before the surgery? It may help a ton to talk to that person again along with your nutritionist. Between the fluids and gas I also gained in the first few days and then I lost all of that plus some a few days later. I had days where I felt just like how you are feeling but reminded myself that there is no turning back. If you eat a cheeseburger there is a high chance you will end up in the hospital again and that will only delay your ability to eat normal foods again. Just remind yourself why you decided to have this surgery in the first place and hopefully that will help you. You will be able to eat again!

Are you allowed purees or just liquid ? If you can have purees a pureed Soup is fairly satisfying at that stage. If its just liquids some of the Protein Shakes have additives that are suppossed to help hunger. I used premier shakes and while they don’t satisfy the mental part of eating they do make you full and take away the physical hunger.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
