How does one get past the fear of having ANY bypass surgery?

Recommended Posts

You dont I had open heart bypass many years ago and I would not want to be opened up like that ever again. Thats why I had the sleeve instead of gastric by pass it was done laparoscopy. If the sleeve was not an option I would have forgone WLS

easy... just imagine living the rest of your life as heavy as you are right now.

then imagine living a life free of obesity.

done.

There is a risk with everything you do. You have to look at what the risks are and weigh them against what the outcomes could be. It was hard for me as I took care of bariatric surgery patients and we had some not so good outcomes. Make sure you research your doctor and the program for outcomes, ask questions. Good luck

How does one get past the fear of obesity related illness and disability?

It's all perspective.

I'd a lot rather have a two hour surgery that I'm well prepared for, have tests to ensure my safety, and my doctor and dietitian helping me to succeed.... I'd rather fight the good fight...

Than to simply wait for a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, or obesity related cancer (or any combination) to kill me passively while I do nothing.

Letting fat kill me scares me a hell of a lot more than using every tool in the box to try to defeat it.

I was scared out of my mind the week leading up to it, and I almost bowed out but I ended up doing something that eased my mind that may not work for everyone.

I watched the surgery on YouTube a few times -- not for the faint of heart. But for me, seeing it play out live, seeing the technique, hearing the surgeon as he carefully described every detail, helped. Made me feel like I understood exactly what was going to happen to me. I felt informed and it gave me a sense of control, in a weird way.

If you like medical videos, give it a try. If not, definitely don't lol...

I choose the sleeve but I too was scared.

So scared that I set my affairs in order, turned to prayer and reminded myself I lived every moment of my life and wouldn't change a thing (except being obese)

May I ask how many years has it been since having the surgery? How are you doing now? I’m thinking about having the sleeve. I should be a little more honest when I speak of my fear. My biggest fear is leaving my family. I’m a care provider for 3 members of my family. Husband has Muscular Dystrophy (is in a wheelchair), sister is developmentally delayed and my son is autistic. If something were to happen, they would end up in a nursing home.

Thank you this helped a lot! My biggest fear is not making it through the surgery. I’m a care provider for 3 members of my family. My husband is in a wheelchair with Muscular Dystrophy, my sister is developmentally delayed and my son is autistic. All which are stressers. If anything were to happen to me, they would have to be placed in a nursing home type of facility. I guess I’m going to have to figure out a way to get pass this fear. My insurance (Medicare) won’t cover the cost of the nutritionist either (450.00). I have never smoked a day in my life and have breathing issues. I have asthma and was given a breathing test. I was measured at moderate. Trying to figure out how since I have never smoked and if I have the surgery, will my breathing issues improve? So many questions. My apologies I’m rambling. Thank you for listening and the advice.

I think the challenges you have looking after your loved ones should be the reason for looking into getting the surgery. They need you and you cannot be there for them if you start having obesity related illnesses. Obviously it will be a lot harder for you to go through the process with so much on your hands. Talk to a bariatric doctor and see how you go.

SurpRise I'm on the spectrum myself, I don't "come out" to everyone but I'm high-func Aspie. Didn't always have the diagnosis, as a Female Aspie, first they denied,we existed, we ( I'm 72) learned to cope, sublimate, try to fit in, our symptoms seldom got the attention male autistic had, but we are as Neuroally Diverse. My mother (who really didn't understand) told me I didn't try hard enough to make friends, oooh I tried but they, didn't want to befriend me. I had an aunt who told me I was preverse, the term she was looking for was obtuse. She told me to run thru the house with the sweeper, how was I supposed to know she wanted to vacumn,? she didn't say so. Other autistics don't upset me because I'm there too.Love your son, sure our neural wiring may be different but we are wonderful people who do have great value. I learned this in adulthood after being told I was innately flawed from childhood on. You have to take care,of yourself too and if weight loss is in your future I for one will cheer you on. sorry I got on my soapbox but I thought you, might, understand. Give my best to all you love and i,know you'll want to be my friend.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
