Uncontrollable sugar cravings

Recommended Posts

In the last year i have had my gall bladder removed and a hernia repair redone due to a rupture again. Since this surgery I have had uncontrollable sugar cravings like i did before my sleeve surgery, I also have reflux and I am finding I can put more food into my stomach. Does anyone else have these insatiable sugar cravings?

Sometimes. But when I stop and think, I realize it is my head that is craving sugar. Specifically chocolate. I "think" I'm craving chocolate and then I have it and I realize I don't really like it as much as I think I do. It's really hard for my head to catch up to my actual tastebuds.

For reflux, does your surgeon have you on something for it? My surgeon automatically requires that we all take something. I am on Pantoprazole but there are others. I can eat a LOT when I don't follow the plan. If you follow the plan and have Protein first, you actually can't eat as much or don't want to. Junk food -- can fit a lot of that in so I really try to stay on track. It's hard but if you do, it works.

Best of luck.

My Protein intake is not as high as it should be so maybe that’s where the cravings are coming from. My gastro dr, different from the surgeon who did my surgery, did an endoscopy and put me on pantoprazole, but at my check up this week with the nurse practitioner at my surgeons office she told me they really don’t like for you to be on acid reducers too long. I’ve been on them for a year and if I don’t take them I feel the acid.

As bizarre as this sounds....eating a little sugar is the worst thing you can do for really fierce sugar cravings. Particularly if it's refined sugar. Don't do it....it'll set you up for a blood glucose spike, followed by an insulin spike, followed by rebound hunger with more intense sugar craving.

What you can do...is eat a moderate amount of a low glycemic carb. oatmeal. One slice of low glycemic bread. Beans. Something that will raise blood sugar without the spike....and the rebound hunger.

Do make sure you're eating enough calories. Starvation isn't a good diet strategy.

Yes, up your Protein intake and always have protein first.

Regarding acid reflux -- all doctors are different. Even with this surgery, some doctors (like mine) require you to be on something like pantoprazole, while others don't. It makes it really hard to know what the right thing to do is. My guess is if you are having reflux, then take the pantoprazole but also avoid the trigger foods.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
