6 month Supervised Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

I’ve have BCBSM, so I have to complete a 6 months supervised weight loss.. I was scheduled for 5 visits with my a Dietitian, but my insurance doesn’t cover visits to see a dietician. Someone told me I could go visit my PCP instead.

Will seeing a PCP affect my approval odds? What should be covered in these visits? In the approval process, what do they look at?

Those are terrifc questions, genia.

I don't think that seeing your PCP for your supervised weight loss will hurt your odds...but he/she really should do some research for you on the appropriate things to cover. Hopefully your PCP is willing. Your bariatric surgeon should be on board, too.

At my visits, my dietician did a lot of documenting the kinds of meals I was eating and going over everything in my food journal (where I was expected to write down literally everything I ate). I was quizzed on portion sizes (dietitian gets out measuring cups and says....which one is an appropriate serving of veggies/potatoes/protein?) We were given resources and recipes, snack ideas, talked about the role of Protein in post bariatric surgery diet....talked about Vitamins and started taking them presurgically.

The big thing...was getting weighed, and having a medical record of that weight.

My insurance required visits to my PCP for the medically supervised weight loss. The documentation had to include my diet, weight, exercise. If unable to exercise due to physical limitations that had to be documented as well. My surgeon had a form I received in my packet as a sort of guide for the PCP to follow.

I had to have 7 total visits (the first one doesn't count) and if I had paid out of pocket, it would have been $48 each monthly visit (continuous). Mine had to be from an RD.

$48 doesn’t seem to be too expensive monthly. Where was this Dietician? At a clinic?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
