Afraid To Eat After Reading Stories...

Recommended Posts

I'm on the liquid stage, am about 6 days out from being banded. I'm supposed to start mushies next week but am getting nervous after reading about people getting chicken stuck.

It sounds painful and now that the hunger is going away, am thinking maybe I should just stick with the liquids...

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks.

Becky :ranger:

Hi Becky, I wouldnt worry about it. I think at first I felt great, lost some weight and had good restriction. THen, the swelling in my stomach went down, and I had absolutely no restriction what so ever. I just had a fill for the first time, and sometimes meat or chicken will make me "feel the band". Ive been told you may need to have a few fills before you reach where you want to be. So, if you get over the restriction you have now, dont worry, its normal. Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone for responding and your support!! It really helps a lot! This is all so new to me (as it is for all of us), and I don't want to do stupid things and get stuff stuck. :rolleyes

Is anyone eating nuts yet and if so, how is that going?

I don't know about your doctor's program, but chicken was definitely NOT on the plan for the first 30 days for me. The only meat I could eat that fell into the "mushie" category was "soft fish".....like fish filets and tuna. I personally would not try chicken now. I don't think I ventured to try chicken until something like my second week of solids, and then just a small amount. It was fine. I haven't had any problem with it at all (and I like the dry kind...white meat, which is harder to get down). Mushies should be just that....soft food that doesn't have a lot of mass to it. I call chicken a full blown solid.

I'm starting week 3 and my post-op diet booklet says I can have any meat/vegetables/eggs as long as they're pureed. Personally, I can't stomach the idea of eating pureed food, but I spent a lot of time before surgery practicing chewing to puree consistency. Is there a difference between pureeing the food in a food processor and chewing to the point of puree texture?

Kacee, I totally agree with you! I'm in that 30-day period of soft foods--and eating eggs, tuna salad, refried Beans, and anything else that is pureed! My surgeon said if I have to chew, it isn't soft food!

So chicken definitely does NOT fit into that category. (And BTW, the bandster who got chicken stuck and slimed--8 days post-op no less--said it was "shredded chicken".) I don't even think I'll be eating shredded chicken when I'm back on regular food!

I'm willing to go slow, be satisfied with soft foods for the next month--after all, we've got the rest of our lives to try regular foods!

I was banded on 10/1 and am on mushies until Sunday- I can eat chicken salad without any problems- the only thing I haven't tried is bread or Pasta, but I have had toast- no problem, but I haven't had a fill yet- also, I have had some nuts, but made sure to chew them well

My issue is that by now (week 3) my nutritionist said I should be getting my Protein from food (it says meat/eggs/vegetables) and not Protein Drinks, but the food needs to be puree consistency. I can only eat so much cottage cheese, so is there a difference between chewing to puree consistency and swallowing pre-pureed food?

Not as far as I am concerned, but you should check with your doctor- I am eating everything except bread and pasta- eggs, hamburger, meatballs etc.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
