Help! Not meeting protein and water intake.

Recommended Posts

Hi. Sounds like your really having a tough time right now. It will get better. I had sleeve surgery three weeks ago and I'm still having problems hitting my daily Fluid and Protein goals. When I saw my surgeon and nutritionist a week ago I was between 28-35g protein and around 18-24 oz. fluid. It was work to get that much in a day. Since then, I have increased my fluid intake (not to goal though) and I'm still working on increasing protein. So, be gentle on yourself. You can only fit in what you can given you're only 12 days post-op. If your fluids are so low that you're dehydrated then you need to call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room. What I found pleasant-tasting was boxed chicken broth. Eventually, I had sugar-free Popsicle-brand popsicles and sugar-free Jello and pudding (they tasted too sweet at first). You may have already tried these things. If not, are they worth a try? Wishing you better days ahead.

Oh, I use Premier Protein which has 30g of Protein per 11 oz. box. I couldn't drink it all at once. Id have a couple of oz. in the morning then in the afternoon and then at night. You may have already heard of them or are using them. costco sells them.

Hi Katfight. Thanks for your replies. I have the premier shakes and clear. They just taste bad to me now. I called my surgeon and currently waiting for a call back.

Protein Water has been a God send to me - 30g protein and not all thick and gloopy like shakes :)

SlimFast is also good as it has Protein and some of your vitamins/minerals without the chalky taste of some Protein Shakes x

You are pretty new and only 12 days out. I would concentrate on your fluids more than the Protein right now. It doesn't take long to become dehydrated. That is the worst feelings for sure. Also, my Surgeon told me that the Protein Drinks count towards your Fluid intake. Be kind to yourself and KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!

It's still early. I would try and just sip l day long to make sure to hit the Fluid goal. For me watering down the premier shakes worked well, I would double them with plain Water and sip that all day long. If you have a nutritionist they often have a series of things to try in the unlikely event that tastes change, our packet had a page on it.

For what it's worth, my nutritionist made a distinction between Protein isolate and protein concentrate. His preference was protein isolate because it is more digestible than concentrate. Most of the premier products I looked at were protein concentrate. The exception to this was their protein Water. Isolate is harder to find but I have found chocolate and vanilla flavors at Sams and Walmart.

I'm 12 days out and on full liquid diet. I am having the hardest time getting in all my Protein 70grams and Water 64oz. My taste buds have changed and pretty much everything is gross to me. I can only stomach pink crystal light. My skin is dry and my eyes are super itchy. Please help.

Went through the same thing. Won't lie...that phase sucked. My favorite drink mixes tasted terrible. The best tasting Protein I ever had was now awful. And my formally tasty chewable vitamins made me want to gag. Good news is that it's short term, but makes it rough starting out.

Focus on the fluids. Get a big variety of drinks to have on hand: Propel waters, Powerade Zero, Mio, even popsicles. Anything that is sugar free should be fine. I know I didn't get my protein in all the time because I hated the taste of it all and had no interest in food. Powerade and popsicles were the only thing I remotely liked.

I haven't had my surgery yet. I'm having it in 2 weeks but I just wanted to say hang in there! I'm guessing it can only get better and that it is just going to take time. It's a good thing to keep in touch with your surgeon which it sounds like you are doing. I want to wish you good luck and I am sending positive thoughts your way.

I was told by my Surgeon that we need whey Protein. I'm not saying my Dr was right just passing on information. I hope it helps. Take care

Just to be clear, I am not saying there is a problem with Whey Protein. I'm just passing on information that there are two types of Whey Protein ( Whey protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Isolate) and that he recommended that I use Whey Protein isolate. If you look at the ingredient label it will say whether it is Whey protein Concentrate or isolate.

I was exactly the same. I switched to a Protein specially made for bariatric patients. I use Unjury, I have chocolate, vanilla and plain. I use almond milk for the flavored shakes and put the plain protein in chicken broth. I tried 6 different brands before finding one that worked for me. Also popsicles count as Fluid. I found sugar free big sticks (Stater Bros, Vons) that are a life saver. Best of luck, it gets better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
