Blood thinner shot to prevent clots

Recommended Posts

How may have you had to get this while in the hospital. I've heard of some people who have to do it to themselves when they go home even. Any experience here?

I had surgery Wednesday and received a shot of heparin just prior to surgery and lovenox twice a day during my hospital stay. I did not have to go home on any anticoagulants though.

I had to have lovenox in the hospital and then had to give myself lovenox injections twice a day for ten days, I think. It could have been five day, surgery was three years ago.

I had lovenox in the hospital, but not at home. I had the most spectacular bruises from it...looked like I'd not only been in a knife fight (seven little laparoscopy incisions), but got slugged a few times, too. LOL:)

I had to do the shots for 2 weeks myself when I was discharged. It wasn’t all that bad, but I did get some pretty nasty bruises.

Hey - I had them in hospital and to give myself a shot in the evening for a week when I got home.... Not fun but not complicated or painful. I too got a few little bruises - nothing major. Don't worry x

Hi. I had sleeve surgery on 12/28/17. My BMI was in the 50s so I have to take Lovenox. I was in the hospital for 22 hours so I had 1 shot there. I was prescribed 1 shot daily for 30 days. I was nervous about giving them to myself so my husband was giving them to me until one day when we forgot to do it at the scheduled time. I remembered a little while later and had to inject myself. It wasn't so bad. Since then, I've injected myself a handful of times. You'll be okay. :):)

I have experience giving Lovenox shots to my husband after he was injured in a car accident. He will just crow with glee if I have to give them to myself at home :P I know for sure I'll have them in the hospital. Hopefully won't have to take them home with me!

Same here. No big deal. I have to give myself shots once a day for 14 days. My surgery was Jan 18 and got home on Jan 19 night. Al is good!

I had lovenoxin the hospital and then I had to give myself a shot at home for 3 days after surgery. It’s not bad. I was taught in the hospital how to give it and the needle is SUPER tiny. Doesn’t hurt at all

I take blood thinner normally for an artificial heart valve, so I had to do Lovenox shots for two weeks before surgery and a week or two afterwards. They are no big deal. You pinch the fatty part of your stomach, clean it with alcohol wipes, and do the shot. It doesn't hurt too bad unless you don't grab a fatty part . . . then it hurts like a #$%^&! You might bruise a bit, but even that's not a big deal.

I should not have too much trouble finding a spot for a shot- my whole belly is fat-thought that was one of the reasons I was, having bariatric surgery.

LOL! I thought the same thing . . . but then I accidentally grabbed a part that wasn't fatty enough one day. Holy cow . . . that really hurt!! Just make sure you grab the fatty, lower part of your tummy. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
