JST 4 Posted January 22, 2018 I was prescribed a Tylenol with codeine elixir after surgery. It didn’t cut it so, they gave me Demerol shots at the wellness center I stayed in after surgery. I asked my doctor for something stronger and was prescribed gabapentin and tramadol. I can’t take gabapentin as it causes my heart to race, and the tramadol, though crushed, was painful to swallow when mixed with my Protein Shake or Water. It also gave me a killer headache. I felt worse than I did immediately after surgery. I stopped taking the tramadol and feel so much better. I don’t even need pain pills and I’m 3days post-op. Has anyone else experienced something like this?
Rainbow_Warrior 996 Posted January 22, 2018 No pain meds required at all. Not pre-op! Not post-op. Just no pain requiring assisted pain relief.
Krista27 341 Posted January 22, 2018 I hate tramadol always has made me sick. Lucky you don't need them that is great. If you start having pain call your doc and tell them the side effects and they will put you on something elseSent from my SM-J727T1 using BariatricPal mobile app
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted January 22, 2018 Had a little narcotic the day of surgery and the day after. After that, regular Tylenol was fine. My pain was never bad and I probably could have gotten by with less than the couple of shots they gave me...but I compromised with the nurses and had a little to get a good night's sleep and a comfortable ride home. VSGnewguy 164 Posted January 22, 2018 I erred on the side of staying ahead of the pain and used the morphine pump while in the hospital but used very little of the Tylenol with codeine after I got home.

That’s amazing you didn’t have any pain. I did at first. Yesterday I took Tylenol once. I don’t think I’ll need it today.

My doctor told me to take children’s Tylenol if I need anything. I bought some just in case but haven’t had to use it so far today. 1 Krista27 reacted to this

That’s great you never had bad pain. Mine isn’t bad now which is a godsend. I haven’t been sleeping well since surgery.

While at the recovery and wellness center I alternated between Tylenol with codeine and Demerol. It helped a lot. Now that I’ve adjusted I find I don’t need much Tylenol at all. None so far today. KatFight 207 Posted January 22, 2018 I'm so glad you're feeling better. Although I haven't had a similar experience with pain meds making me feel worse, I believe it happens to some people and your experience is proof of that. My pain was managed with liquid Tylenol here and there and a large ice pack. For those who need more, there's "no need to be a hero" (a line my obstetrician once said to me). PAIN is the body's way of telling you that you have a problem. Masking pain so that one can "soldier on" through difficult days with the family or work is not good for us. I try to react to pain with either sleep or gentle exercise.
Losebig 508 Posted January 23, 2018 They gave you very mild meds. It’s good you didn’t have significant pain. Sometimes the meds can give you a bad time. Vicodin for example gives me a terrible headache, which was ironic because I took it after a scalp surgery! At my hospital they used dilodid and oxycodin in the hospital. They sent me home with Oxycodin, but it doesn’t really effect me, so after a complication they did dilaudid in pill form, which worked well. I needed pain pills off and on for the first 10 days or so... but as mentioned had a complication that caused some pain. Note to your DR if any of the meds cause issues and they can put it in your chart so you don’t get that med again. Nothing worse than meds that make it worse.
