Pre-op diet—not impressed with nutritionist!

Recommended Posts

I’ve met with my surgeon last month as well as with his nutritionist in his office. Nutritionist gave me a piece of paper and said eat one thing out of each category (there are 3 categories) for every meal. I said ok. She then asked me what I think might be the hardest thing for me and I said sugar. I said that I love sweets and candy. She said “well just don’t buy it.” Ok... I guess if it was that simple I wouldn’t have even been talking with her!! Then she left the room. Grrrrrrr [emoji35]

Ask for an entire program outline, month one, month two, etc. Ask for what will be your program during all phases pre and post op. I would have a conversation with the surgeon's office manager if this is a continuing issue. Is there a Pysch consult? Bring this to his/her attention.

I was given gradual guidelines - like start tracking food with a free app (Baritastic), cut back on soda, then quit all soda, stop all sugar drinks, gradually wean off caffeine, aim for 60grams of Protein daily and 64oz of liquids, etc.... This was a series of changes over 6 months....also an activity log had to be kept for insurance.

Try substituting sugar free pudding or popsicles for candy/sweets. Buy seasonal fruit - oranges are great right now or frozen berries. Have one individually wrapped piece of really expensive smooth chocolate daily - tell yourself that only the best will do, and have just one. Don't aim for cold turkey deprivation - you will only break that rule, do this gradually.

Ouch. That really doesn't sound like a person that truly understands the struggles of a carb addict. There is some truth to the fact that you can't eat what you don't have available. Except for the fact that some of us will have cravings so strong that we will drive to the store lol

Give her another chance before totally writing her off. Maybe you will feel better about her the next time you meet with her.

BTW- Once you go through the carb/sugar withdrawals, you will quit craving them.

Sugar was a problem for me and I had to literally just not buy it. Just don't buy is easy to say but it's hard to fight that battle I know...

but it just may be the only solution. And best to fight it prior to surgery

Try a stair step approach and sub out sugars until you aren't using anymore.

I bought zing which is half sugar half Stevia and gradually went full Stevia.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

LOL.

One can't believe that she is actually getting paid for giving you that kind of "advice".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
