Does weight loss surgery really improve PCOS? My surgeon told me it is the only permant solution

Weight loss greatly improves it, so the surgery should help in that department. My wife has it and lost 60 lbs (no surgery) and it has pretty much gone away.

My gynecologist and surgeon both said this as well. My gynecologist team is actually the ones that recommended me to my weight loss team due to all of my medical issues/female medical issues. What my surgeon said is that many hormones rest in the bottom part of the stomach so by removing this it helps the body, in a way, reset itself. I know many ladies who have had weight loss surgery and their PCOS symptoms went away and were able to be pregnant within 2 years when they couldn't before.

My gyno is also the one who referred me to the surgery center in October. I was able to get an appointment within a month. I’m stuck in the middle of the 6 month diet now

That's great! I did the 6 month diet and then I requested to pause for a few months for personal reasons. Now I'm back on track and have my final decision one day before my year anniversary :-) I'm excited to not have acne from PCOS anymore! LOL

It was 6 appointments. I think because I took 6 months off they would like to see me once more. Also, my surgeon had a baby so I didn't get to see her for 4 out of my 6 appointments (I saw her PA).

My husband and I had been Trying to get pregnant for 2 years. The problem... My cycle was all over the place. One month it was there. The next not. It would even skip 2-3 months. I've had PCOS since I was 12. My doctors kept saying lose weight and that will help. I did research and saw that the sleeve could get rid of PCOS and obviously help lose weight. I said it's worth a shot and is cheaper than IVF if having to go that route. I obviously want to be able to run around with our kids one day and not get winded... I had my surgery September 26, 2017. My cycle came in October. Before that it was July! Since my surgery, I have no PCOS symptoms and have had a period every 26-28 days. Doing the surgery was the best decision I ever made! Focusing on getting healthy to then get pregnant.

It may not completely take it away, just like some people get hungry and some do not. It will help with pcos, that is for sure, as insulin resistance is a huge issue. But losing weight alone can do that too. I went to an endocrinologist before surgery and he said all of my levels looked great! My pcos was dormant at that stage (I lost 90 lbs on my own, before hand.) my cousin lost 30 lbs on her own and then got pregnant. It definitely will help!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
