Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!

Recommended Posts

Just to chime in... lap-band isn't even open for discussion with my clinic. There have been just too many removals and revisions for them to see it as a worthwhile option.

My band was awesome for awhile (lost 120 kept it mostly) but like most eventually it fails. Mine flipped and I couldn’t even drink Water without horrid pain. I had it removed. A few friends had similar. I hate to scare you :(

I have my first consultation next week to get a lap band . I was certain that the positive results from the lap band would outweigh the negative. Now I feel scared en very unsure after reading this forum. Everything from cancer to heart problems! How can I then go ahead with such a surgery?!

I had a lap band put on in 2006. Lost very little weight because the fills were never done just right, but besides that constantly dealing with acid reflux, throwing up and more. Having revision surgery to SIPS on Feb. 14.

I was orginally going in for the band as well, but the nurse told me that so many people who had the band are coming back for the sleeve because of issues they had and sometimes the insurance will only pay for a surgery once so many of them are out of luck to get something else now. I am so happy I got the sleeve, I am only 3 1/2 weeks out and I feel great!! I know a few people personally that got the band and wound up getting it removed for the sleeve, so you might as well do it right the first time is what I figured. Good luck!!

Don’t get the band! I had the band in 2007 and am having band to sleeve this year. The band was the worst mistake I’ve ever made, to make it worse both times are self pay. I only lost 20lbs and I can’t eat meat, raw veggies, apples. The only thing that stays down is junk food.

I wouldn't waste my time on such a surgery. My surgeon won't even do them.
But if it's worth the risk for you go for it. I've met not many people who don't regret it.

What is your stats?

My bmi is 32 at the moment and I’m not even sure if I’ll be approved the surgery. It’s also A LOT of money and a life altering surgery (whether that be good or bad). I just feel like food controls me, appetite gets the best of me, I need a long term TOOL to help me deal with my eating habits.
Bmi of 32. I wonder if you should just look into. Sleeve.

I’ve read a few studies but have only come across the bad ones, it seems to be the most numerous. Some people say it’s the best decision they’ve ever made and others regret it severely. How will I know? Because opinions are so vastly different. I’m only 21 years old and haven’t read about a band lasting successfully past 15 years, which means it won’t be a life-long helper for me. I was optimistic about the idea of something giving you control of your weight for good, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

How about the fact that alot of places refuse to do it anymore.. I would say that is a huge indication.

There is the " one thing may not work for one but work for others " but the fact alot of people are reporting their surgeons won't even do them anymore tells you alot don't you think?

Just had my lap band removed on 2/14/18. Originally, placed on 6/9/2010. I had lost weight and within the last 18 months started have complications. Doc found that 90% of my band had eroded and was on the inside of my stomach. The surgery and recovery have been absolutely horrible. I haven’t had solid food in over a month and liquids for the last almost 2 weeks. I would not recommend the lap band at this point. My WLS does not do them anymore. Too many complications with them.

Had my lap-band removed on 2/14/18 after having it since 2006. Should have gotten it removed sooner. Dealt with so much vomiting, acid reflux and much more. While in there I had another revision surgery. Feeling a thousand percent better. My surgeon tries to steer everyone from getting it, although he still has that as an option.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
