I cheated on pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I was suppose to do a pre-op diet consisting of low carbs w/ only 700-900 calories a day for two weeks prior to my vsg surgery. To say the least I cheated 3 days and now I'm scared my liver hasn't shrunk enough although I have been losing 1-2 lbs a day. I still have 5 more days until surgery which plan on doing a strict liquid diet of Protein Shakes and Water. Will this help?

So....14 Days total

6 days you did ok

3 days you cheated

5 days to go.

I think as long as you don't cheat any more at all...and do your last five days by the book...my gut says you'll be ok. (as always, asking your group is the right answer here)

Your doing great my surgery date is next week Wednesday. And I suck at this diet. But I’m trying my best to stick to it, so i can live a better and happier life. Keep pushing

The main downside to cheating is that when you do you're reseting the clock so to speak. The pre-op diet is meant to be low carb and get your body into a state of ketosis. If you introduce carbs back into your diet then you're stopping that process. It may take 2-7 days to enter back into that state. Mind you everyone is different.

That being said I wouldn't worry that much, but stay strong the final few days. Keep that in mind that the better you do for just a few more days the better it sets you up in the long run for the other side. It's tough but you can do it!

From what I have read and seen (youtube videos) people "cheat" all the time. Do what you need to do to get and stay on track. Stay strong. Mind over matter girl, trust me!

Huh, I've never heard that part about ketosis. I thought the purpose was calorie restriction to induce visceral fat loss around the liver.

I know you can maintain ketosis long-term on up to 50g of carbs but usually it's recommended to stay under 20g to induce it for the first time. Many Protein Shakes and bars contain sufficient carbs to total more than 20g, right? My diet in particular is 5 shakes OR 4 shakes, 1 bar OR 3 shakes, 2 bars. I could stay at 25g carbs if I did all five servings from Premier Protein shakes. But if I added, for example, just one Pure Protein Bar, that's 15-25g just right there, plus 20g for the 4 shakes.

It's been several years since I was interested in Keto so maybe the recommendations or guidelines have changed.

Lol that's when I have cheated as well. It seems like I'm fine during the day but at night time is when I cave in. My surgery is Thursday.

I was told that if you don't eat enough during the day you will be hungry at night thus making you vulnerable. So I made sure I started my Protein early and every 3 hours. It worked. But that was only for a week.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
