Flying Solo and kind of scared

Recommended Posts

I've always been extremely independent but not always by choice. Just sort of throw way the cards fell I suppose. Now I am 12 days out from sleeve surgery and have so many mixed emotions, mostly excitement to start this next big journey in my life that I've been so desperately waiting for. And yet the saddest emotion I have is complete loneliness. Anyone go through this alone? And how did it turn out for you? Did it make the process more challenging or make you even stronger and more determined?

Do you have a local support group for folks going through WLS? Might be a good place to make a friend or two to share the experience with?

I guess it's just the typical story of my life..... I just have to get it done, even if it is by myself and with very little support. It'd be nice to someday k ow what it's like to have real true support.

That is rough, Luckeevee. I lean on my bestie and my family so much...I know flying solo must be a huge challenge. I admire your strength in doing this for yourself. Can't be easy without much help.

I too am alone, I'm 21 days out from surgery, and I find support and answers in groups like these. I'm focusing on my diet and exercising. I know I'm kinda new at this, but I definitely think it's making me stronger. You can do this. We are all here for you, 24/7. Good luck!

You don’t have to be alone. Make delicious delicacies. But the best quality small meals instead of quantity meals and live your life. I’m already planning on buying expensive cuts of meat and seafood and eating the appropriate sized portions with fruits and veggies. You can have delicious meals for the rest of your life and live like you always have. This surgery only provides you with the tool you need to lose weight but it doesn’t change or fix any life problems you may have had prior. If that may be the case talk to your doctor & maybe seek counseling. Good luck & congrats on your surgery.

Maybe you can find a buddy on here or at a meetup. There's also Instagram. My mom and niece will be supporting me but sometimes we need someone going through the same thing.

I went through the surgery by myself. The few people I told are not particularly supportive. Does the hospital by you have a support program? Mine has been very helpful. ObesityHelp is a great site if you want good advice.

Hi i just wanted to say good luck and if you want to chat please feel free to send me a message... no one should have to go through this alone if there is an online community here to support you! My name is Sharon :)

((hugs)) Talk to your surgeon and find a support group. I agree--we all need people and a support network. It's even better if they are or have gone through similar situations!! Saying prayers of peace for you dear friend!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
