So I have PCOS & I started birth control pills pre-op since I was advised to wait 18 months after surgery before trying to get pregnant. Anyways since the weight loss I’ve started my cycle on my own a week ago (still bleeding) & I’m still taking the pill & supposed to start my cycle Sunday (with the pill.) Has anyone gone through this or is going through this??? My nutritionist told me it would take several months for my body to get adjusted!

I haven’t, but I got my period right after my surgery. It was THE heaviest flow I’d ever had, and lasted over a week, when it’s never been longer than three days. I took my pill several days before my cycle stopped. Are you taking an Iron supplement? I know a lot of times heavy periods can deplete iron. Call your doctor if it hasn’t stopped by the end of what should be your next cycle. I wouldn’t worry too much. Major surgery + weight loss can whack up your system! Good luck!

Thanks for the response. It’s not really “heavy” it just keeps going and I’m wondering since I normally start towards the end of the month if I’m just going to continue to bleed straight through...ugh

I have an IUD and I don’t have cycles. I started having bleeding the day after surgery. It wasn’t heavy, just annoying. My GYN said it could’ve been started by the Heparin shots I was given. She also said she sees this happen a lot with bariatric surgery patients. Our fat cells store estrogen so when you have rapid weight loss, all that extra estrogen is then released. Unfortunately, it can happen for a while until weight loss stabilizes.

Yes! I have PCOS and I have been on the pill for about 11 years to help with some of the symptoms. I had surgery in April and at least 6 of those 9 months I have had 2 periods. It was usually every other week for me. My PCP said this wasn't abnormal because fat cells store hormones, so when we lose weight the cells shrink and the hormones get released into the system. It puts your body into overdrive to regulate the hormones. Once your weight stabilizes your cycle will become more regular (at least that's what I've been told). I'm currently in a stall and it's been pretty stable so that seems about right. Unfortunately you just need to wait it out until then.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
