New here. Considering Surgery and bipolar

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I’m new here. I am 49 and my BMI is 34. Although I’ve never been thin, i have gained much of this weight in the last 10 yrs, post babies and once I started taking medications for bipolar II. I take lithium, Lamictal and Latuda.

I’m seriously considering surgery. I’m just beginning the research process. My biggest concern is how surgery would impact my body’s ability to effectively absorb my medications. Remaining stable is more important to me.

If anyone has any advice or experience with this, please feel free to share. I’d really appreciate it.

Best thing to do is to take your medication question straight to a bariatric surgeon. Email the office so the doc can write a response at his/her convenience. I'm sure they'll answer. Or schedule a consultation appointment. You could also ask a pharmacist.

Best wishes and good luck:)

Hi. I agree with Creekimp13. A doctor, psychiatric nurse practitioner (that's who I see), or a pharmacist are qualified to answer your concern. People with bipolar disorder have had sleeve surgery (had mine 12/28). As you know, we're all individuals so a medical professional can take a look at your individual situation to let you know whether a sleeve surgery will still allow you to be stable. You're not alone in the process - even if you're at the beginning getting answers to your concerns.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
