Hungry/craving coming back

Recommended Posts

I’m 23 months post GB surgery and my hungry and cravings are back. I don’t eat nearly as much as I did pre-surgery, however my hungry and cravings are ramping back up...especially at night (always been my toughest time). I read that the Paelo diet can help to settle the hunger and cravings. Anyone tried this or have suggestions they can pass along? Thanks!

Yes, the return of the dreaded hunger/cravings! I have not yet tried the Paleo diet but am looking into it. I'm trying to go back to basics. I have also returned to a nutritionist but this time not the one at my DR's office. So far she's really good. I made sure that she had experience with people who had WLS and she seems to. I've been to NUT's before but so far she has been really good while the others were not. She actually helped me with a meal plan, not just showed me plastic food portions.

One of the things she is having me do and is what I have read on sites like theworldaccordingtoeggface.com and others is to not be afraid of foods that are not low-fat. In fact, when I have cheese or yogurt or things like that, it's ok to have the full fat version. It will be tastier and actually better for me. And, she said that I have not been eating enough of the right foods which is why I eat more later.

Try to go back to basics, make sure you don't drink with your meals, etc.

Thank you for commenting back and for the information. I’d heard this Day would come but I’ve worked so hard to achieve my goal wait that I worry about regressing to old habits since my cravings are coming back. I ate a whole slice of pizza yesterday and could have ate another (I believe). That’s the thing that worry me. I don’t want to stretch my pouch. Best of luck to you esskay77!

Thanks! I remember mentioning to my surgeon about the hunger being back and how surprised I was because I had thought it was gone for good. She said no, it comes back and when it does, it comes back like a beast! Luckily, once you get a handle on it, it really isn't that bad, it's just relearning how to react to it.

Exactly esskay77! The GBS is a tool and will not work unless I comply with the conditions of it. I just wish I didn’t have the cravings

There are two phases to gastric bypass surgery. These are the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. The strategy of these two phases are different. I described my experience in the maintenance phase in the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
