For real... give it to me straight!

Sooo let me air out my dirty laundry, AKA my smelly breath. My mouth tastes like garbage and my breath (I can only imagine) smells like it tastes. Never have I had this problem in life. Is this because of ketosis? Is this going to go away. I hope I’m not suddenly skinny but I’ve traded for smelly.

I’ve tried biotene dry mouth spray, nope didn’t help. I drink 100+oz of Water per day. I’m trying to stay away from gum because I know I can’t have it after surgery.

Please help!

It's not your mouth...it's your actual breath that smells odd with ketosis. When you start eating carbs again after surgery, it'll go away:)

Part of the smell is a release of keytones in your breath (that smell sickly sweet, almost maple syrupy), part is the breakdown of high Protein (that makes your breath smell of ammonia like yesterday's litter pan.)

When you start carbs again....you'll spill fewer keytones. Reducing protein in your diet from super high liquid stage levels will help with the ammonia part.

This, too, shall pass. You can mouthwash all day, but you're just gonna have weird breath.

That said....mouthwash anyway, and take care to clean your tongue...cause oral health issues can spring up when bodies are stressed (like during major surgery)...and the last thing you need is a sore tooth or gum, or case of thrush, etc.

Glad to know it will go away! One of the very unpleasant side affects for me. Ick! SMH.

This. I kept a bottle mouthwash with me at all times. Even if the mouthwash is only a tempoary fix it gave me some peace of mind and freshened things up. For me drinking plain Water never helps the breath issue. I typically do Crystal Light mixes and am a coffee lover, so having some flavored drinks can help as well.

I do mix it up from time to time with crystal light. I’m thinking the mouth wash would give better relief than the breath spray. I need some serious blast of minty goodness.

Athough I prefer liquid mouthwash over anything else those Listerine strips work great. Nice to keep in your pocket when you need a quick fix.

Hydration helps. It will go away eventually. Drinking lots of Fluid will help dilute the ketones and will help your perception of taste.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
