Weight loss stall 3 weeks post- OP

Had Gastric Sleeve done on Dec. 18 , 2017, when I started this journey I was 211- 209 lbs. Day of Surgery 199 and post OP I am 189.4. I have been walking and biking over 1 hour a day. Taking weekends off. Following my nutrionist advice but having a hard time getting all the Water in. I have stalled in any weight loss for nearly 1 week and a half. I'm feeling discouraged. I did get my period 4 days ago. I have been off insulin since the surgery date. My glucose levels are monitored 24/7 as I wear a monitor. I have been suffering with low blood sugar going into 40's and 50's a few times this week and last week almost 3 times a day. Need advice.

Well stepped on the scale this morning lost 1 pound. With exercise and hard work. Feeling a bit more optimistic.

Monday I was up a pound, yesterday I'd lost most of that, today I'm down a half pound. Today is also three weeks to the day since my surgery. I guess we'll see if the stall has started when I step on the scale tomorrow morning!

Half a pound is great. don't weigh yourself as soon a you wake up. give your body some time to wake up. I spoke to a relative who did the surgery 2 years ago. She explained that the body will go into starvation mode and that I should really try to get in all of the protien and Water. She explained the stalls happen when in starvation mode. imagine 1/2 a pound a day or every couple days could easily loose 2 to 3 lbs in a week.

I also had surgery on 12-18 and also posted today about not losing anything these past 2 weeks!

My weight the day of surgery was 226.2 lbs and I lost 12lbs the first week. I have lost and gained 1 lb the last 14-15 days.

I am:
  • Tracking in MyFitnessPal and getting in 60-65 grams of protein/day
  • BM’s are regular and has been very early on
  • Fluid intake is consistently 64 fl oz. & more and has been very early on
  • Portion sizes are from 1 oz. - 1.5 oz. I am eating 3 meals/day and drinking 1/2 Protein Shake between Breakfast & lunch and the other 1/2 between lunch & dinner, drinking Fairlife milk 2% a couple of hours after dinner (supposed to be 1% but it was not available that day in grocery)
  • Calories were previously in the 400s and I have increased this week to the mid 500s

I just don't know what I can do differently. I have been told by my team the expectation is to lose 1-2lbs/week and am nervous it won't happen since I am this early out and have not lost a lot.

I guess we'll see.....

I know the feeling. Its frustrating but your doing what your supposed to do and your very organized and keeping track of everything. This will pass. At least according to my aunt who had a similar experience this is normal. Tomorrow I have a follow up with my Surgeon. Will post a update.

I feel the three week Stall pain....been there the last couple of weeks.

Stall broke and I lost four and a half pounds in the last two days. Just suddenly. It happens...the legends are true:)

I'm 5 weeks post op and eating 1000-1200 calories a day, tolerating more foods, and have a lot of energy.

Feeling really good:)

Wishing you all a quick end to the stall:) It'll happen.

(someone asked for my stats on another thread...don't know if this is helpful to anyone, but figured it was on topic.)

Started at 270 in June.

Lost 30 pounds in 6 months of pre-surg diet visits using the mayo Clinic Diet mostly. (240)

Lost 10 pounds in 2 week pre-surg liquid diet. (230)

Lost 14 pounds first month after surgery. (216 today)

So, I lost 23% of my excess body weight the first month (60 pounds excess weight on day of surgery)....which beats the heck out of the 18% that is the average first month weight loss. Feeling positive!

Wow! Thank you for sharing your stats and Congratulations on such a big loss!

Can you please give us an idea of what a typical day of eating looks like for you to get to 1000-1200 cals/day at 5 weeks post-op?

I am 3 weeks post-op and just recently upped my calories to mid 500s (previously 400s) and am having a heck of a time getting up to 600 cals/day due to meeting the Fluid requirements and appropriately spacing out my 1-1.5 oz meals 3 times a day.

We do 3 meals and 3 Snacks totally 1000-1200 calories and at least 60grams of Protein.

Old school standard for weight loss surgery was to have people eat low calorie as long as possible, and keep them on three meals to teach this habit. What you're describing is very much how it's always been done.

My group is part of a larger group of bariatric doctors who are following a protocol developed by a research hospital (University of Michigan). This protocol has been impressing the bariatric community and is being picked up this year by Cedars Sinai and Bethesda.

One of the things they've learned is that you get one chance to reset your metabolism...and that resetting it at a starvation level is probably not the best idea. So the new protocol is to get people eating as close to maintenance level as possible...as soon as possible...for the best metabolic reset. Exercise is stressed, too. You want your new metabolism to be a hot burning furnace that can handle normal calorie loads.

They've been looking at ten years of data, and have found that people who eat very restricted calories do lose weight faster...but that people who eat more (1000-1200) will lose just as much, but at a healthier pace....and at the end of five years have less regain.

Bariatric endocrinology is an emerging science:)

I am definitely going to do some additional research and bring this up at my next appointment.

Are you actually able to eat the specified amounts on your plan? I ask because, me personally, I am not able to get up to 600 calories right now as I am always full from meals, Water, shakes and am constantly drinking something to meet Fluid and Protein requirements.

My portion sizes have slightly increased from 1ounces to 1.5 ounces, but I cannot tolerate any more than that currently.

Yes, I can eat it all:) And that menu is from soft foods a couple weeks ago. Now, I'm eating tons of other things...almost a normal diet. Still waiting on salads, nuts and steak...but next week Friday I get the green light for those.

I had an appointment with my dietitian and doc today...5 week check up....everything is going great...and I had a fun surprise that I'm gonna write a post about. LOL.

Here's a pic of my lunch yesterday...One cup of tofu chili and a whole wheat wasa. Yep, I ate it all....and had three Snacks and two more meals:) For dinner, we had Protein Pasta (made with chickpeas and legumes added to the wheat....tastes just like normal spaghetti and you get 10g of protein for 150 calories! Had some chicken and marinara sauce on it and a little mozzarella cheese. For Breakfast, I had an egg, half a whole wheat english muffin, and a strip of turkey bacon. Snacks were greek yogurt, a protien bar, and half a caramel premiere portien in a big cup of Decaf coffee (tastes like a latte).

I eat well...I'm never hungry...and my surprise today was that I lost a little more weight than I thought!

Stalls are a regular part of the process. They will happen often throughout your journey, so you have to accept that. Pre-op (I lost 100 pounds during the six month insurance-required diet program), my loss was linear (3 pounds per week like clockwork). Post-op, it was more a step function (lose 10 pounds in 10 days and then stall for 2 weeks). It is frustrating as the devil, but it is how it is.

Hang in there and stick to your plan. I am proof positive that hard work, persistence, and determination pays off!!

My stall is over. Lost 2.4 lbs since my last post. My surgeon wants me to stop weighing myself everyday. He only wants me to weigh in at the office. I did a 2 hour walk today. I meet with the nutrionist tomorrow. Persistence is the key. I like how organized some of you guys are. I need to step up my game and start writing things down again.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
