Any way to make Slim Fast more palatable?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am being banded Wednesday November 7th, and my doctor requires that I be on a diet consisting of 3 cans of Slimfast Optifast per day and Clear liquids. My question is this- does anyone have any good ideas on how to make Slimfast more palatable? Has anyone tried blending it with ice in a blender? I think the taste is just sooooo gross.

Thanks! :)

Heather

My dr wants me to use the Low Carb b/c of the higher Protein component (not the optima).

I was told that I can blend them with fruit. I was also told that some people used powdered Jello to flavor theirs. Haven't tried that yet. May need to add more Water to thin them out, but I'm giving it a shot this afternoon with a frozen berry blend.

I must be fortunate because I do not mind the Slim Fast High Protien at all, it takes some getting used to at the beginning but the more you drink them the less they taste bad. I do think they need to be chillled though I do not care for them warm.

The trick to enjoying slim fast is to freeze it & then eat it like ice cream. Just use a can opener and take the lid off and eat it. I found that I felt more satisfied then just drinking it. Before I could drink the whole can & I would be starving after, but when I ate it I was full after 1/2 the can. I think it tricks your mind into thinking you are eating. The one I liked was chocolate. I couldn't stand the strawberry! And didn't try any other flavor. Give it a try & let me know what you think.

By the way it does take a while to defrost, so let it sit out for about 15 minutes.

I use the low carb version of slimfast as well. It has more Protein and less carbs than the slim fast that is labeled high protein. Go Figure.

As far as changing the taste. First off I have to, Absolutely HAVE to drink it ice cold. I put it in the freezer for 10 - 15 minutes before drinking it or pour it over crushed ice and drink it through a straw.

Other things I have done would include blending it with a couple chunks of frozen banana (about 1/4-1/3 of a banana) or 1 tablespoon creamy Peanut Butter, or mixing in Nestle's Low-Carb hot chocolate mix (only 25 calories and very few carbs - sorry can't remember exactly how many right now but think its in the single digits)

I think drinking it through a straw helps. Otherwise, I can taste the metal of the can!

Also, I just got a cooler that plugs into my car's lighter socket to help keep it cold for days I'm on the road. I just got it yesterday so we'll see how well that works!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
