Hi Guys,

So today marks my 5th day having the surgery!

I was really scared going into the hospital at 5:00AM chanting to myself “I can do this” over and over.

It all started great they took a urine sample and told me to change into a hospital gown, everything after that went by really fast I was in the operating room by 7:00AM.

I remember waking up in the recovery room in pain. But I expected that and soon after they gave me pain meds I was fine.

I stayed in the hospital over night and the next day I was allowed to go home with a full bag of medications.

Today, I can eat 3 purée meals a day ya me! Also my life consists of taking small sips of Water ever minute.

I still have sharp pains near my incision wounds every time I move, and it’s really hard for me to bend down to pick up something off the floor :( But, i’m getting through it everyday it gets easier.

Hope this helps!

AJ

The newbies love these posts...play by plays really help them prepare. I remember really appreciating finding them when I was considering surgery:)

Hello, I'm trying to get started on how do I go about getting this surgery started? Do I make appointment with my doctor and tell her I want this done? I've been over weight most of my life and I can't seem to lose the weight but gain it. I'm sick of being heavy and having medical problems. I'll be 50 soon and I want to be healthy and live not fat with heath problems. I'm 5'5 and around 238 lbs. I have Medicare part A and B and Tricare for insurance. I'm so lost and scared that my doctor will say no for some reason. Help!

I actually did not go thought a primary doctor. I found an ad about the program on a magazine and looking back at it now I think it was my sign to start losing weight. I called the program and signed up for the orientation class and they tell you how to schedule appointments with the doctor and the dietitian and honestly from that it was a six-month process but the hospital made it really easy to follow up with everything.
-hope this helps

I did not go through my primary care physician, since she is not a supporter of WLS. I discussed with my insurance company and did the research on doctors in my area. Six months later, I’ve been approved and I’m scheduled for my pre-op Feb 8th!
I hope this helps!

I went to my primary Dr and spoke about weight loss. I was referred to a surgeron’s office. They gave me a call when they received the referral and handled everything! They schedule my appointments, let me know everything I would need to do throughout the the process and if I was missing something they let me know right away so I could get the paperwork done! Good luck with the process! Just remember it takes about six months.

One thing you might try is looking at the largest hospital in your region and see if they have a weight loss or weight management program. That's how I got started.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
