Job hinders water consumption

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Im hoping to get some input on this. I’m still in the process of getting information before making a decision to go through with WLS. One thing that greatly concerns me is getting dehydrated. I’m a surgical nurse and we aren’t exactly allowed to carry Water bottles around with us in the operating room. I already struggle to get water in now while I can gulp it down.

Surely this isn’t the only job where this is an issue, so I wondered if anyone had input regarding my concern. How do you manage? DO you manage or have you had issues where you’ve gotten sick?

Thanks in advance!

How long do you typically have to go without being able to drink? Meaning how long on average are you in the OR? It's not the end of the world if you can't get something to drink for an hour, but for the first few months it can be a struggle to get your daily intake in. Lot of folks have no issue at all, but others like myself had a hard time getting 64oz a day in. Once you get behind it can be difficult to get caught up.

It may be up to 4 or 5 hours between getting out. I’m wondering if since I work with people that know specifically how and why Id need to drink often that they could accommodate it.

Yeah, definitely talk with them and see if there's a way. Going that long will make it difficult to not only hit your Water goals but also your Protein. I would think there would be something they could do to make it work! I'm a big drinker so I can't imagine going more than an hour without anything.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
