There's 2 main reasons: first is the risk of accidentally swallowing it and it getting stuck. Second is that the act of chewing is sending signals to your stomach to preapre for food. Although it may be different between people it can lead you to feeling hungry when you really aren't. I had horrible dry mouth or bad tastes in my mouth with low carbing after surgery. I just went with some sugar free mints when needed and avoided the gum.
BigViffer 3,544 Posted January 3, 2018 Just to clarify, if someone were to swallow their gum, it wouldn't plug anything up or block anything past the esophageal sphincter. Stomach acid would make short work of it. Also, the act of chewing signalling the stomach to produce extra acid can lead to heartburn. 1 BigAussieGirl reacted to this

RedOrangeSunrise 53 Posted January 6, 2018 I was told no gum chewing for the same reason as no straws (gas). I don't miss it as much as I thought I would. I carry dental floss and tic tacs instead (used to habitually chew gum between snacks/meals).
BigAussieGirl 162 Posted January 8, 2018 My Dr said gum is fine once you are healed up. It’s not going to block anything and if swallowed stomach acid will dissolve it
