7 days post op and i am kicked while down

Recommended Posts

I am 7 days post op and I thought getting my shakes done would be easier. However, i am having a hard time getting any type of Protein down. I have to be on a liquid diet until i go back to dr on January 12....i went out and purchased unflavored whey protein and Tried mixing it with chicken broth.....lets just say that was a bad choice. Any advice? I keep drinking as much as I can with out actually puking.....oh and on top of all of this, I have thrush and a sinus infection. Please tell me this gets easier and how the hell do i make it better???

I would recommend the Protein Fruit Drinks like grapefruit or orange. I also recommend protein Soups which were quite good. You can get them from the store on this site. Also the protein hot chocolate was yum. I also had a hard time with the Protein Shakes. Good luck!

I’m one month out. It does indeed get better. Focus more on staying hydrated for now, then start working the Protein in. You will slowly be able to increase what you drink each day and as your food options increase your goals become easier to reach. Hang in there! :)

Thank you! I just feel like I am failing....and being sick on top of it makes it worse. Thanks again!!!

I may try those Soups out. Any particular one that you really like?

I bought the variety pack to keep it interesting. I liked all of them; cream of chicken, Tomato, chicken, beef and cream of mushroom. The “cream” of soups were not really “cream” and fine during the liquid phase.

I am 6 days post op and have been successful with the Pure Protein brand of Protein Shakes. costco carries them in vanilla and chocolate and has caramel recently too. I also discovered the banana cream flavor (at the grocery store) which was pretty good. (Chocolate is actually my favorite and tastes like chocolate milk.)

Each serving for me (4oz) is 10 g of protein so it hasn’t been too bad getting my recommended amount.

I agree that adding the unflavored whey with broth was not a positive experience.

I also found a recipe today for a fruit smoothie which was about 8 g of protein for 4 oz. I could have upped the protein if I had used yogurt, but wanted something different:
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
½ banana
½ cup frozen berries
1 scoop whey protein powder

Blend and strain.

I also had a hard time with Protein isolate, i found one that work for me. I am now taking GNC banana-strawberry flavour, 2 scoops in 300 ml Water has 40 g of protein. I have to water it down a little bit to tolerate. I am so much happier now, and relieved.

My doctor's office recommended nectar protein and I tried it. It is amazing! I have the lemon tea flavor. It actually tastes like tea.

I'm glad you were able to find a protein that worked for you as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
