Started pre-op diet today!

Recommended Posts

I’ve started the dreaded preop diet today! Which means I’m officially two weeks away from surgery [emoji28]! Here’s hoping it’s a smooth (and not too hangry) two weeks. The nerves are helping with suppressing my appetite at least [emoji23].

All the best to those who have just started or will start their preop diets!

Hard road ahead, but you'll make it. I believe in you! Yep, you might get hangry...and weepy...and foggy...and pooped. But this, too, shall pass...and you're almost to the prize!

Day three sucked for me. But after that, I kinda gave up and soldiered on. You'll get there.

Thank you! I hope I can get over that 3-day itch everyone mentions. Of course my sister had to bring home some delicious charcoal chicken today didn’t she *eye roll* [emoji23]. First day and I’m already fighting temptation!

The first week can be a real bear. Once you get over that hump it isn't so bad. Best of luck to you!

Thank you! I’m on the dreaded day 3 and I feel terrible haha. My whole body has these slight jitters/tremors: talk about a detox!
I spent the day fantasising about a can of tuna... A CAN OF TUNA! [emoji23]. Lord have mercy

Thank you for your kind words!

I will say this - as difficult as it is these two weeks can serve as a major eye opener to your relationship with food. It made me realize how many times before I simply had head hunger and not real hunger. That was a big wake up call for me. My biggest struggle was not working to cut out my diet sodas and caffiene earlier. Most of my misery was from caffiene withdrawls.

As dumb as it sounds when you find yourself dwelling on thoughts of food it really does good to just get up and walk away and go do something for 5-10 minutes. It helps break up your thoughts about food and distracts you for a bit. Keep telling yourself that the better you do over these two weeks the better success you'll have during surgery and reduce the risks. It will all be worth it in the end.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
