Had anyone gotten sleeved with a 30-31 bmi

Recommended Posts

I am looking to see if anyone has gotten sleeved with the minimum bmi standard.

I have tried so many diets only to have them ending in more weight gain. I wouldn't even be as upset about my weight or bmi number if it weren't for HOW i carry the weight. I am a big ol apple!

Im looking to find others who are in my boat and what their outcomes have been post op.

Unless you have serious commodities...specifically, type 2 diabetes.... I don't think a Canadian surgeon is gonna touch you for sleeve. Gastric balloon, possibly, but not sleeve (unless the following information has been updated)

Currently, Canadian clinical practice guidelines suggest bariatric surgery for adults who have had previous unsuccessful attempts at losing weight by lifestyle modification and who have • A BMI of 40 kg/m2 or higher (class III obesity); or • A BMI of 35 kg/m2 or higher (class II obesity) and obesity-related comorbidities. These guidelines are in line with recommendations used in other countries.

With preliminary evidence of positive results for those with less excess weight, some experts now suggest considering patients with BMIs of 30 kg/m2 to 34.9 kg/m2 (class I obesity) and type 2 diabetes for bariatric surgery.

Sampathak, I’m in your same situation. BMI is 30. I’ve discussed this with two US docs and they both declined me because I do not have the required complications e.g. diabetes etc... in addition to 30 BMI.
One surgeon told me that the risk involved in surgery would not be worth it & it would not be ethical for a surgeon to medically intervene when the “issue could be solved through diet & exercise .”
I was super bummed. Not sure why he’s assume I had not exhausted every effort during my entire life to lose the weight.
I hope others chime in & tell us about their experiences.
I’ve read on the forums that the Mexico-based docs do conduct surgery for lower BMIs.

Hi I am a year and a half out. I had the surgery. It can be done. I do not have diabetes at all but I do have high blood pressure. I had been trying to loose weight over 7 to 10yrs before surgery. I am now under my goal weight.

Hi! My BMI is 31.1, I am getting sleeved on March 5th. Diabetes runs in my family, as well as high blood pressure and obesity. I have been dieting since I was 7 years old. I've lost weight on my own and then gained it back, over and over...and each time I am gaining more weight. I just see my life going on a downhill path, and I for once want to be happy with my body. I know that it's not going to be easy, but I think it will be worth it.

I was sleeved in MX with a BMI of 32. I was pre-diabetic, with a family history of diabetes, no other co-morbidities. My US doctor would not consider me unless I was a minimum of 35 BMI with multiple co-morbidities.

My insurance required a minimum BMI of 35 with co morbidities. If I had the co morbidities and a BMI lower than 35 the insurance company would not pay for the surgery. A neighbor recently told me her insurance carrier denied her, and she has a BMI at 33 with diabetes, high BP and heart disease.

I was sleeved with a 32.7 bmi. But I had years of history that had me yo-yo ing between 32 and 35. Plus, high BP, cholesterol and sugar. I did a consultnwith 4 Dr's, and no one had any issues. I just said my weight was 195 when I started the process.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
