Surgery scheduled 1/29 woo hoooo!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys first time poster here. My vsg surgery is scheduled for 1/29 with Dr. Andrade in NY. Starting out at 218 lbs. I'm 5'7 and type II diabetic which is the only reason I'm qualifying for surgery. I've completed all my appts and am now ready for pre-op diet beginning 1/17. My biggest fear at this point is Hair loss because I already have extremely thin hair. Has anyone NOT experienced hair loss and if so, how did you prevent it? Thanks!

I know a few people who have had good luck preventing Hair loss by doing Lady Rogaine as a preventative. Some people report good success with big doses of Biotin and using anti-thinning Shampoo.

I'm doing ok so far....not quite a month out. hair loss usually hits about 3-4 months out, I'm told. My nutritionist also said that hair loss was correlated with people who ate fewer than 1000 calories for extended periods of time. There's a push at my group for us to get to 1200 calories per day by week 6. Most people at my group are getting 1000 per day by week 3-4.

Best of luck in your surgery.. as far hair loss try Biotin pills, take pills asap, I think it takes like a month to kick in... also keep track of your Protein intake..as far as hair loss, dont panic, is not like you will end up like Bruce Willis. Take your biotine, meet your protein intake. you are almost there.. best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
