Why Tight in the AM?

Recommended Posts

So, back when I was banded 6 years ago, the answer given as to why we're tighter in the AM was "that's just the way it is." LOL I'm wondering if in the pat six years, anybody has had a doctor come up with a better response??

I've had the smallest fill of my life (1 cc in a 4 cc capacity 9.75 cm Band)... and I am so amazingly tight in the AM. I can't get in any solids until after 4 p.m. usually. (Yes, I'll be getting some Fluid removed in a day or so). But I began to think... why??? What could be the reason?? Does our body somehow produce Fluid while we sleep that crosses the Band's membrane and it takes some time to migrate out again?? What could it be?? And why does a warm drink sometimes loosen things up??

Just wondering if anybody had a better answer than "Just because." :)

Nope.

I can eat in the mornings and I try to. I'm not too tight then, I actually quite often get tight at night to the point of not really eating dinner.

But I've definitely become a Breakfast skipper, which is not a good thing. I just dont want or need it these days whereas I really used to.

I eat it anyway becuase you should. Breakfast eaters have far less trouble managing their weight than non breakfast eaters. If I dont eat it I tend to eat something wildly high carb and inappropriate mid morning, and that throws me out for the entire day - because then I dont want lunch because I just ate a muffin, so I dont eat lunch and then I pig out in the afternoon and then dont want my dinner etc etc.

I have heard that some people develope a small amount of swelling while laying down, which causes the tightness in the morning. Do you notice if a ring you might wear feels any tighter as well or if your feet/ankles seem a bit swollen compared to later in the day?

One suggestion I've heard for tight morning bands is to start the day off with some warm tea or another warm drink people claims it helps "loosen" their band. More accurately it somehow relaxes or loosens up the stomach tissues inside the band but same results.

Not me, I don't eat until I am hungry. I have no problem managing my weight.

OP... the reason for being tighter in the AMs is because of a Fluid shift in your body. When you are in one position all night (flat) it changes the fluids in your body. When you stand up and walk around it changes. If I am thirsty and want a lot of Water in the mornings I run for about 10 minutes and I'm good to go.

Also, there is a mucus plug in your stoma that forms when you don't eat or drink in some time. I'm sure that contributes as well.

I'm talking in statistical generalities of course.

It probably doesnt hold true for a lot of lap banders who are tight in the morning becuase they have no appetite all day. But it does for me, I pig out on donuts at 11 am if I dont eat the breakfast I dont really want, lol.

I do that if I eat crap food. Once I start crap food I'm history for the day. I'm hungry all day long. If I eat good carbs it doesn't seem to bother me. One Frito and I'm a couch slug chowing away for the day. :)

Very interesting question!

I mentioned it several times to my doc but he never gave me a precise answer or reason why that happens, he just knows that most patients say the same about it.

Generally speaking I think it has something to do with body fluids and the fact you have stayed relaxed on a flat position for those night hours while you were asleep. I don't think it is the band that contracts per se, but our body fluids that become more evenly distributted, mainly on the mid area of our body.

I can't start off my day without Breakfast. My metabolism is very slow and if I don't «fuel» it up, it just won't burn off weight as it should. Starvation, in my case at least, slows things down, so I keep eating (good stuff) every 2 or 3 hours maximum. Usually I start my day with a good shake or a smoothie (oatmeal, a banana, a little Protein and milk).

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
