SouthernGirl76 74 Posted December 28, 2017 Is popcorn out forever? My surgeon and nutritionist don’t seem to agree.
tigertia 2 Posted January 10, 2018 I think it is one of those varying opinion foods. My stage 3 for life plan says popcorn is the better options if I snack.
abefroman329 704 Posted January 10, 2018 My post-bariatric surgery cookbook has recipes with corn in them, which surprised me.
orionburn 1,024 Posted January 10, 2018 I've had some here and there, but not something I do often. I didn't have any issues with it but it's one of those things where you can tell it would make you feel like crap if you ate too much (for me at least). I don't think I even tried it until maybe 10 months out.

tigertia 2 Posted January 10, 2018 (edited) I think I would be nervous like the rest of you to try actual popcorn for a long while. But I will say that before surgery I loved these Snacks called Popcorners, here is a link to show you https://www.amazon.com/POPCORNERS-Carnival-Kettle-Popped-Non-GMO/dp/B004IS56Y0?th=1. I have always liked popcorn over chips before surgery, so when I found these about 3 years ago, I LOVED them. The Dollar Trees here in Texas carries them. A bag is 160 calories, but I am sure that none of could eat an entire bag in one sitting, so these might be a nice once in a while snack option for us who just want to try. Sullie06 1,013 Posted January 11, 2018 I was allowed popcorn after 6 months. I have it on occasion and have no issues with it. I've never been a big popcorn person so I don't eat it very often but I avoid popcorn with lots of butter or toppings. A little air popped with sea salt is a nice snack on occasion though. blizair09 3,250 Posted January 11, 2018 There's probably no one correct answer for this. I'd ask your surgeon and see what he/she says. It is probably advisable to wait a while post-op to have something with that texture, but there are a lot of variables. Even at 16 months post-op, I still follow a Keto way of eating (25g of carbs per day or less), so it would be a solid no for me.
abefroman329 704 Posted January 11, 2018 I ate 5-6 kernels of popcorn earlier today (the pre-popped kind that comes in a bag) and tolerated it fine, but I did chew each kernel at least 20 times.

Losebig 508 Posted January 12, 2018 It wasn't mentioned one way or another in my program, but they want us low carb for 6 - 12 months so it's out for a while. I like it as a snack with some salt (no butter), but it does have all the shells that stick in everything, so I imagine you want to be fully healed. 1 SouthernGirl76 reacted to this
AZLoser 103 Posted January 12, 2018 No food is out forever. Early on the kernels can get stuck in your new staple lines so don't try it. After that it's up to you. It has no nutritional value and is high in carbs. And it it's airy so you can eat a lot without feeling full. As my doctor said, ' you know farmers use corn to fatten up the livestock, right?' I have a handful now and then (I'm a year out) but I think of that whenever I do. It's not a healthy snack in spite of what the popcorn marketers will tell you. It's slider food. This is why I love this group. 💕 1 AZLoser reacted to this
