Spent Christmas Eve in the ER with kidney stones? Anyone else had this problem? Still have not passed them any suggestions? This happened to me once about 8 yrs ago the last time I did low carb, so it must have something to do with this diet

I've had them before, usually the prescribe flomax and pain killers. Not a lot of fun. If you can catch it they can analyze it and tell you what type it is, which can help you avoid it in the future.

Interesting. Do you get nutrition labs as part of your program? If so you could check the most recent to see how your Calcium levels are. When I had them last time it was because of too much calcium (I was using tums with Calcium a LOT). I'm a bit worried now actually as they have me on calcium supplements. Hope they go away soon.

I dealt with kidney stones and acid reflux for 25+ years. I found an Amish vinegar product on Amazon for my acid reflux, after using it for about 3 months it downed on me that I wasn’t dealing with stones anymore and was able to pass fluids without pain. I talked to my Gastric Sleeve Surgen about continuing with a vinegar product after surgery and he told me to wait until i got on soft foods before starting it again.

USE ONLY APPLE CIDER (DO NOT USE WHITE VINEGAR OR IT WILL BURN YOUR THROAT AND STOMACH)

Brags Unfiltered Organic Apple Cider Vineger with Mother in it works well also. I mix 1 tbs of vinegar, 1/4 tbs pure lemon, 2 tbs of organic honey to 4 to 6 oz of hot Water and sip it like a tea once or twice a day. You can increase the amount of vinegar, lemon or honey to your on taste. The vinegar desolves the stones in your kidneys and urinary track and helps prevent them from coming back. The lemon juice helps keep you flowing and the honey helps cut the bitter taste of the vinegar and lemon but honey also acts as a mild laxative which helps with the constpation problem that you may have after surgery.

PS. This formula also helps cut my hunger cravings and helps with your weight loss journey. It is also great for preventing leg cramps.

There are different kinds of stones. Phosphate stones can be helped by urine acidifiers like vinegar or lemon juice...or even Vitamin C tabs.

However, Calcium Oxalate stones (very common) can form in acid urine...and it won't help them.

it seems contraindicated and weird....but TAKING YOUR CALCIUM actually HELPS prevent Calcium Oxalate stones from forming in your kidneys because Calcium binds oxalate in the intestines.

Vitamin C is high in oxalate...so it would be contraindicated for Oxalate stones (even though it's ok for phosphate stones..lol)

Best things you can do:

1. stay hydrated! The more Fluid the better.

2. Take Vitamins as prescribed

3. If you have a stone, try to catch it so it can be analysed and you know what you're dealing with.

4. If you have Oxalate stones....avoid foods on the oxalate food list.

5. See your doc, and listen to him/her. They honestly don't go to school for a decade to give you bad advice:)

NewGuy......there was no criticism at all.

Your advice was great for Phosphate stones. They do respond to urine acidifiers...like your suggestion of Amish vinegar.

Unfortunately, urine acidifiers are ineffective for the very common Calcium Oxalate stones...because they can continue to grow in even very acid urine.

For the life of me, not really sure how you read that as criticism...but I apologize if you experienced it that way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
