3 Years Post Op RNY

Recommended Posts

I’m 3 years post op RNY. Before surgery I weighed 266 pounds and have lost a total of 100 pounds. I have recently started gaining some of the weight back. A total of 13 pounds in the past few months. My question to anyone else who may be experiencing this is, what can I do to get a grip on this before it gets out of hand?

Why not go back to the basics and first principles your learned (and, hopefully, practised) for some time after your surgery.

Retrain yourself with Protein and well-spaced Water breaks.

Take out your old post-surgery nutrition advice sheets and go through it all again. Try living between 750 and 1000 calories after the first month of rebuilding your routine.

Take up some exercise to busy yourself when you're not committed to work or other responsibilities.

Good luck.

a 10- to 20-lb regain after hitting bottom is very common - but not inevitable. If it's bothering you, then deal with it now rather than waiting until it gets out of control. It'll be a lot easier to lose 13 lbs than 50. As the above poster said, go back to the basics - Protein first, then veggies. Then if you still have room, a piece of fruit or a small amount of "good" carbs (like grains or beans). Ditch the sugar and "white carbs" if you're eating them.

if, on the other hand, calories are the problem rather than carbs, then cut back a little - or bump up your exercise. My maintenance level is 1700 calories/day. I've noticed that if I go over that too many times in a week, my weight starts to go up..... Maintaining weight is going to be a lifelong struggle for most of us, unfortunately - but it's do-able.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
