Post surgery check list

Recommended Posts

December 28th...tic toc, tic toc...

Hi all,

I wanted to make sure I have everything I need for the first couple week post surgery, here is what I have so far. Please add anything you think is a must have or would be helpful to have in the house ahead of time:

What else should get food / liquid wise? What else?

Thanks!

You may want to get something to flavor your Water, gatorade (dilute with water), broth, Soup. I wouldn't load up too much as your taste buds may change for a time so what sounds good now may not be post op. This goes for Protein Shakes as well. I loved some flavors preop, but after surgery they tasted awful for the first month or so.

Get a tube of chapstick for the hospital. I did just for the hell of it cause I saw several people mention their lips being dry and cracked the day after anesthetic.

I was so grateful I did! Wow, do you get dry that first day!

Also...take some comfortable lounge pants. You'll still have to wear the gown cause of your IV and all....but putting lounge pants on your butt will make it a whole lot nicer to walk the halls as often as you can...which will help you more than anything.

sugar free Jello.

If you take any meds...get sugar free Cool Whip. You can crush them and put the dust in the Cool Whip...goes down easy.

Liquid Tylenol/Acetominophen for adults. You'll want to get off your narcotic prescription ASAP so your bowels work again and so you can drive. I was able to get by with just regular Tylenol the first full day I was home...sped up feeling like myself.

A hot water bottle to take to bed. You get cold after surgery. Not sure why. Having a hot Water bottle to put my feet on in bed was a really nice comfort item.

A thermometer.

If you're going to discontinue blood pressure meds after surgery....having a blood pressure cuff is a great idea to make sure it's going ok.

I've been thinking of the same thing. Just trying to get prepared. To add onto your list:

1. blender or food processor

2. broth for sure! I recommend a broth that you can find from Walmart. It has an increased amount of Protein. It is also organic and gluten free. I've attached pics. They have chicken, vegan, and beef. Warning: the vegan has a lot more calories

it's good for the little granuals in capsules, too. Open the capsule and sprinkle the grains on the Cool Whip. I take my Omeprazole like this:)

I was allowed Greek yogurt right after surgery, along with sugar free Jello, pudding or popsicles/fudgesicles. I had those on hand along with chicken broth (I don't like beef), Vitamin Water Zero, some Crystal Light to flavor water and my Protein Shakes.

Biotene swabs for dry mouth - after surgery you feel like you will never get your mouth hydrated. Heating pad instead of hot water bottle. A thermal cup because stuff gets warm/cold because it takes awhile to get stuff down after surgery. After the first week, I could barely tolerate sweet Protein Drinks, I had ready-made Isopure punch or blue raspberry and mixed it half n half with premixed crystal light, Isopure is tart, 4ogr Protein for 20oz and clear. Also tea because warm liquid relaxes the muscles in your esophagus and stomach. I agree on the Sam's Choice Bone Broth at Walmart, I added garlic and simmered vegetables in mine for extra flavor then strained it. Audible books for while you are walking. Take naps when you need them, sometimes you don't realize you are tired and BAM! You hit a wall of exhaustion five minutes later.

Good luck.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
