Surgery recovery time?

Recommended Posts

Hey Sleeved ones,

I know there is a lot going on physically after surgery, and the process varies, but can you quantify about how long it will be until My body is healed from the surgery? Speaking about pain in stomach, incisions, abdomen, etc.

Thanks!

It will differ for each person...there is no way to tell how you will respond as an individual.

That said...I can speak to my experience....

The only time when I experienced anything other than mild discomfort was bedtime the first night after surgery...it was a little hard to get comfortable. Had a pain shot and was out like a light.

I was pretty unstoppable. Woke up from surgery and wanted to start walking. Got myself out of bed with no problems...surprised the nurses, and just kept going. Day after surgery, I felt very much like myself, and went home that night.

Incision pain was pinchy for about 3-4 days. I'm two weeks out and could easily do crunches or a rowing machine, but I'm being good and just walking 7 miles a day instead.

The only thing that really slowed me down was a lack of calories. Needed fuel to think, heal, move. Once I got eating a little more, I felt terrific.

FWIW, I've had 2 kids by C-Section. This was a piece of cake. Surgery was Tuesday. Came home Wednesday by 2 pm. Worked from home Friday. Went to the gym to ride recumbent bike on Saturday (was OK'd by my team for gentle cardio) and was in the office on Monday.

I had a bit of nausea on the way home in the car, but none after that. I really didn't have any pain - didn't take anything except tylenol once I got home. I was a little sore if I slept on my stomach. I was not allowed to lift more than 10 pounds until my post op visit 2 weeks after surgery. At that point, I was cleared to do whatever I wanted.

Every time staff came in at the hospital to check vitals, etc., I walked at least three laps of the hospital floor. I think that helped.

Best of luck.

The only pain I had was from my incision and it took about 2.5 weeks before I was pain free. I had planned on going back to work at 2 weeks but ended up extending an extra week.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
