Moderate Sleep Apnea!!!Real Frustrated!!!

Recommended Posts

The plans were to get an okey from my doctor today for surgery.Pre -admission testing in two weeks. Surgery around Thanksgiving. All seemed to be going my way.

NOW Found I have moderate sleep apnea. Have to wait to schedule another night with the sleep disorder clinic.Barix Clinic then wants me to be on machine for at least 6 weeks before they will even schedule me for pre admission testing. I am extremely frustrated.Seems like Nothing is going right. Can some one clue me in on this sleep apnea.:confused:;)

I have to disagree with you when you say that "Nothing is going right." I think your post is cause to Celebrate. Getting diagnosed with sleep apnea is probably the best thing that will happen to you this year. Sleep apnea is a very serious problem that can kill you. Getting treatment for it is so worth a short delay in the surgery schedule.

I don't mean to make light of your frustration. I remember how anxious I was to get my surgery too. But I still maintain that overall this is good news. When you have sleep apnea you stop breathing at night. This puts a terrible strain on your heart and it can be very serious. It causes loud snoring which can be a problem for a lot of reasons. It makes you tired all the time without even knowing why. I affects job performance and overall quality of life in many ways.

Again, I understand your frustration, but try not to feel too bad. Getting treatment for the apnea is a very positive thing. The lap band surgery will be here in no time.

sleep Apnea is when you stop breathing in your sleep. I was diagnosed April '05. During my sleep study, I stopped breathing 46 times. The diagnosis saved my life. I know it's a set back for you, but believe me it's to help you. I hope it turns out OK. Let us know how you do. Good Luck sweetie!

Different doctors give different advice. I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea, and the diagnosis didn't slow down anything. It did help with giving me two-morbidities along with my 39.1 BMI. BCBS still figured out a way not to pay though, as they said I could not prove 5 years of being overweight. I've been overweight for 15, but I don't have medical paperwork saying so.

I was just diagnosed (had the sleep study last nite) and Thank God I was diagnosed. If you have apnea you will need the C-PAP machine immediately after surgery to insure you are getting adequate oxygen since being under anesthesia can cause your airways to collapse (when you have apnea) while the breathing tube is down your throat breathing for you. I insisted on a sleep study after all my friends here on Lap Band Talk convinced me how important it was. This is a blessing in disguise - I know it doesn't feel like it right now - but it is. I'm scheduled for Nov. 9th and by the grace of GOD the sleep center and the pulmonologist squeezed me in. If I had to delay my surgey - I would have. Good luck, hope you get a quick appointment!

Maria

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
