ttampa77 1 Posted December 18, 2017 Hello Everyone, My name is Tony. I've had Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 5. Now, I'm 40 with multiple health issues, especially obesity. My surgery is set for Wed, December 20th, and I'm sorry about the shrinkage of my liver. I've followed the pre-op diet the best I can. Had to cheat a bit because having Type 1 Diabetes has made it difficult. Has this been a major problem for anyone out there? Thank you so much! -Tony 1 Creekimp13 reacted to this
RickM 1,752 Posted December 18, 2017 This is really up to your surgeon and your individual situation. There was one person posting recently on one of these forums who had a sleeve done instead of a bypass due to the extent of their fatty liver, despite being compliant with their pre-op diet (which somewhat reinforces the point that I have heard from several sources that there is only so much that a couple weeks of dieting can do for this problem.) Some docs are more sensitive to this than others - my doc doesn't do any pre-op dieting other than the typical day before surgery thing and doesn't have any issue with working around fatty livers (it's what he does for a living); other docs may be more troubled with it. YMMV. All you can do is to follow his directions as best that you can - let him know that you had some problems and why, and let him be the judge on it. 1 ttampa77 reacted to this
Apple203 1,314 Posted December 18, 2017 @ttampa77 Sorry about the type 1 diabetes -- I have a 25 YO son with same. Its tough! I'm sure your dr understands that you have to treat hypoglycemia, right? 1 Creekimp13 reacted to this
LittleLizzieLilliput 919 Posted December 18, 2017 I had to shrink my liver as well. I went off of all meds during that stage as I kept getting really low numbers. But I'm type 2 bordering on type 1 due to pancreatic complications. I was able to go through the process well. I have been on so many different medications through this process. I was able to get off of insulin but now that I'm getting close to my goal weight my numbers are increasing again and I'll probably be back on insulin in a few months, sadly. But I'm doing so well otherwise I can't complain. I mean I can, I sometimes do, but I try not too. lol!!!!
