Tips on getting through Pre-Op Liquids

Recommended Posts

My VSG is scheduled on 1/8 and I have bought the two weeks of Bariatric Advantage shake mix from my surgeon but have heard the first three days are the hardest. I have been trying to sub in Premier Protein shakes this week to mentally start to prep but would love to know if any of you have advice for getting through the liquids or how you use the shake mixes so you're not starving, especially after dinner. I am concerned that I am going to fail between dinner and bed time and would love some advice from you guys. Thanks so much.

My biggest hurdle is between dinner & bed too. Sucking on SF popsicles when I want to eat is helpful for me. You can have up to six and still stay under 100 calories!

Start a program of drinking soups/broths/protein shakes/snacks every two-three hours. This way you will not be hungry. It is tedious, but does work. I did 11 oz. Premier Protein shakes for all 3 meals (480 cals), Lite Progresso Soups (creamed or blended) for 2 Snacks (400 cals), and sugar free Popsicles/jellos for 2 snacks (20-30 cals). I stayed under 1,000 calories per day. I mixed this up, and sometimes replaced a progresso Soup with a green smoothie. I did cardio a few days per week, and dropped 25 pounds during my 2 week pre-op diet.

I was on liquids for 4 weeks (3 weeks full/1 week clear). It was hard, but it was also all mental as I was never hungry. I really just wanted to crunch down on something. The sugar free popsicles helped...So did ice...Lots of Sonic Ice.

Anyway, Good Luck!

Thank you so much. The progresso Soups hadn’t occurred to me but sounds like it would take the edge off nothing but Protein Shakes for two weeks.

I have been on my pre-op liquid only diet for now 24 days (my surgeon is asking for 4 weeks because my BMI is over 50...). For me the first day was hard because I hated the taste but I got used to it by the second day.

I remind myself it is for a safe surgery and it is for my health. I took some broth on day 1 & 2 just so I could take all the shakes.

It's not easy, but it is also a preparation for our future life after surgery. I won't lie, I had MANY cravings but I stayed stubborn on not cheating and instead I was telling my SO my craving (that somehow triggered him more then me...). I kept a journal, that I will continue in post-op for my food in take but I write how I feel and so on and it does help.

If you have a craving try to change your mind, do something else and worst case scenario sleep it off. Better have more sleep then not following your surgeon plan.

Best of luck!

What do people eat/snack on if you hate popsicles? Just more Jello, I guess?

If you like coffee as much as I do, I found a delicious high Protein Powder called Chike (see attached pics). I mix it with Fairlife fat-free milk (because it’s higher in Protein than regular fat-free milk) and also about 2 ounces of a chocolate Protein Shake. I mix it in a Nutri Ninja blender with about 3 ice cubes. Honestly, I tastes like a thin milkshake to me and I just love it!IMG_9145.JPG IMG_9144.JPG

Lots and lost of Water. Every time I thought about food I had more water, it got me through to the next shake.

Good luck with your pre-op diet and best wishes for a speedy recovery for your surgery.

Definitely be careful of the sodium in broths and Soups.< br>
There are some Soup recipes too here:

Make sure all soups are well blended. Mix in unflavored Protein Powder as well

Sonic drive thru (fast food restaurant) - their ice is like little rocks.

Great for drinks and eating

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
