James Marusek 5,244 Posted December 12, 2017 My blood pressure dropped around a few weeks after surgery and I went off my high blood pressure meds. Your initial weight was significantly greater than mine. So it is a little hard to predict. You are taller than me. For me I cut my meds in half when I lost 20 pounds pre-op, that was when I hit 240 lbs and then completely off the meds around 200 pounds. So even if you do not come completely off the meds, you may find that your body needs a lower dosage. Congratulations on losing 127 pounds thus far 12 weeks after surgery. 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
shedo82773 1,236 Posted December 12, 2017 I lost 124#'s. Still on 3 different kinds of meds for high blood pressure. I just can't seem to let the stress go!! I guess being off all diabetic meds (insulin and pills) is a BIG PLUS!!! I did take 12 different meds before my RNY and now I take 4 plus my Vitamins. I really want to get off some of my blood pressure meds...but my DR. told me that it is under control and if I stopped any of the meds it wouldn't be under control for long. But hey it might still happen who knows!! Never give up!! 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted December 12, 2017 I've taken Lisinopril and a diuretic for 20 years. After surgery they took me off both, and my BP went up to 146 over 90...too high! So I started taking just half the lisinopril again..... 5mg instead of 10mg......and it went down to 124/82 (livable!). Talk to your doc and monitor it at home. Get a cuff and record it every day so your doc has more information to work with. 2 Pamela wallace and FluffyChix reacted to this
JohnnyCakes 593 Posted December 12, 2017 my BP went from 170/110 (just a tad high) to 110/65 a month after surgery. again, this surgery is a frickin miracle. 3 Creekimp13, Pamela wallace and FluffyChix reacted to this
FluffyChix 17,415 Posted December 12, 2017 So which doc are we supposed to work with to get off our BP meds after the surgery? Is it the surgeon or our prescribing doc, which is my PCP/internist? James, did you do this on your own or did your doc tell you how to taper off? @shedo82773Me too. I'm on 3 and my BP still stays up over 140/80 each day. So I'm trying to be patient and get rid of the stress. But dang! It's hard isn't it? ((hugs))

Bhageerah 161 Posted December 13, 2017 I can tell you that you hypertension is likely due to your heredity. I have lost over 80 so far and I am still on meds, I have had to go back to my Dr and get it adjusted because my pressure started getting too low and I was starting to pass out when I would stand up. My surgeon says that my goal weight is about 30-40 more pounds and I will see if I am still on them at that point. But don't sweat the small stuff, the main thing is that you are loosing weight and are definitely healthier than you would have been without the surgery. And just like @JohnnyCakes stated your PCP is the correct person to see, if they were the person that put you on that prescription. If it was another Dr. then you want to go see them, most Dr's will not unprescribed a medication that someone else has prescribed unless there are drug interactions or other immediate health issues. 1 FluffyChix reacted to this

I have been testing my blood pressure daily for years and I knew when I could go off. On my next visit with my PCP, I informed him that I went off the meds and he was O.K. with that. 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
Berry78 4,261 Posted December 13, 2017 My blood pressure was very high the day of surgery (190/95). A few weeks after surgery it went down to 145/85, and stayed in that range until I hit 200lbs, when it became normal (120/80). For me, getting close to a normal weight was more important than the actual surgery. So.. keep taking your medication, keep an eye on your pressures, and as you lose more and get closer to goal, you may find you need fewer meds, and perhaps get off of them at goal. (Not everyone CAN get off their meds.. there are plenty of normal-weight people running around that still need blood pressure meds.. but a normal weight will give you your best shot at it). 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
