Medically Supervised Diet/Nutrition Visits

Recommended Posts

So my insurance requires 3 months of medically supervised diet & Surgeon requires 3 months of nutrition visits. Has anyone had experience with insurance accepting the nutrition visits with surgeon over visits with pcp? Will be double checking with insurance but want to hear your input!! Thanks!

I went with the 6 month of medically supervised diet and exercise program that was aligned with of the bariatric surgery program. Many PCPs are either unable to fulfill the requirements in order to generate the required paperwork for approval.

Most insurance companies require that you meet with your doctor religiously once every month for 6 months. It seems better to deal with a doctor that specializes in meeting the program requirements rather than a general practitioner.

The elements of the program required that I not only exercised and dieted, but that I kept a food journal, that I attended bariatric surgery support group meetings, that I analyzed my caloric intake for each meal and snack. It was more thorough that what a PCP might direct.

I was given the choice. My PCP has a lower co-pay so I went with my PCP vs my surgeon's office. They really didn't seem to care at all. The surgeon's office did provided me with a form for each month to have my PCP sign and date w/ my recorded weight.

I had to do 12 weeks behavior modification sessions with psychiatric then 6 months supervised diet with my doctor. They can be done at the same time. The psychiatrist released me after 8 weeks. These were insurance requirements.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
