Today was such a horrible day for me. I started my liquid diet the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I had been doing fine until today. I had 2 ounces of grilled chicken breast. I’m so devastated. I don’t know how this is going to affect me. My surgery is next Thursday the 14th. I’m so angry with myself right now.

I'm abit confused. You actually weighed the breast out. And surely that would have given you time to think maybe it's a bad idea ?

Anyway. Stay on track remind your self that you don't want to sabotage yourself after everything you been through to get here. I THINK you will be fine. But don't do it again. I know people to be opened up and liver to big so closed them back up ( it's laproscopic so I mean started the process etc etc.

Yes I am a mom so I cook meals every other day for my teenage child. So I weigh food and put them in tupperware containers so that he has the correct portion. That’s how I knew it was 2 ounces.

But thanks for the advice.

Instead of beating yourself up try to examine what had you do something you had essentially agreed not to do. I have found it helpful to use the things I have done that haven’t worked to examine myself and hopefully learn something that will support me in being powerful and effective in this journey.

The first layer to peel back is what I have used to justify eating something I shouldn’t be eating and how I have rationalized those choices. I have gotten better at catching the rationalization before I put it in my mouth.

According to neuroscience our brain is selecting actions and behaviors well before we are aware of it happening, yet we think we are choosing something consciously which is a complete illusion.

To win this battle all of us need to retrain our brains especially around certain triggers (specific food triggers or that it’s bad to feel hungry).

The preop liquid phase in the hardest. During that phase I had a mantra. “Hunger is health.” It sounds kind of weird but it worked for me.

My surgery is the 14th too! I'm not sure why, but no one put me on a liquid diet. I've been on 6 months supervised diet/weigh ins and I'm down 15 lbs since Aug. However, after all the research and reading, and listening to all of you, I'm starting liquid Monday before Thursday surgery just to be on the safe side. Good luck, you will be fine. LEAN, STRONG, HEALTHY, HAPPY! that is my mantra :-)

Hi insul817, my doctor had me on a 3 week liquid diet and I was doing pretty well. I had been having headaches and I called and spoke with the nurse. She told me to try a different Meal Replacement shake. So I did that. She also told me to take some Tylenol. Now that I wasn't going to do. I don't like taking any type of pain meds. I was talking to my mom telling her how I felt and she said just eat something you may have a hunger headache. She said Protein only no sweets or chips. I debated for hours if I should eat something. But after being hunched over and having a headache since starting my shakes on November 21, I ate some chicken. I felt so bad but my head ache stopped.

Kat410 , thank you as well. And I believe you are correct. I have been telling myself that not eating and wanting food is a mental thing. So I try to do my daily pep talk to myself. But unfortunately it wasn't working for me yesterday with that headache. I'm going to stay positive and not think the worst.

Thank you two I appreciate your helpful words.

That chicken is not going to hurt you. The point of the liquid diet is to get your body into ketosis. There are tons of people whose preop diets include lean meat and veggies. My only suggestion is to stop solids 2 days before surgery to ensure you don’t have anything in your system. My surgeons office calls for two week all liquid diet. But the NUT and the Bariatric specialist from the hospital both said that it’s about eating low calorie, no carb (essentially), and low fat. Ketosis. They said veggies and lean meats can get you there too. Just measure your portions and limit it to one meal per day.

This is a really powerful post! Thanks @Kat410!!!

I agree with @AshAsh1! There are plenty of pre-ops that allow the drinks + 1 low carb meal of up to 3oz Protein + 1/2c low glycemic cooked veggies. So 2oz of chicken won't hurt, unless...dun dun dunnnnnnhhhhhh--it's breaded, deep fried and served with a side of fries and Ranch dressing! *snort*

Relax and keep on keepin' on Mamacita. (Oh and btw? The morale hardly EVER improves with the beatings. :D ;) ) You can't "un-eat" something...well, of course you can...but let's don't go there!

Fwiw, I ate normal solid food right up to surgery. I ate a burger the day before for lunch and a steak the night before. liquid diet was never even discussed with my surgeon. Now, going into ketosis during recovery, yeah, that was rough, and the Constipation was brutal. But I don’t think this is as big a deal as you think it is (I was rny gb, btw. not sure if that matters).

Woahhh. A bit harsh. Doesn't seem like you've done your research on why they implement a liver shrinking diet. But Just to let you know there is a food version of that diet.

The better thing to say would be... glad you made the choice to eat 2 oz of grilled chicken. There could have been a lot worse things that you could have chosen.

I think I know there is a food versain seen I was given that option. Lol what's harsh ? The food option isn't her option so.. I said I was Confused about the fact she weighed it out then ate it. But she explained she weighs food anyway. I wasn't harsh for asking a question. Goodness me..

I'm not going to say that. Cheating is cheating. It's best to try not to cheat. I'm sure we have all cheated. But I won't say weldone for cheating. Yes chicken is on other plans it's not on hers. And I know some surgeons will not do surgery if THEIR plan was not stuck to. Whether it's someone else's plan or not. But if its the better thing to say you say it. And leave me to say what I already did lol.I'm 5 months post. What do you know about what I researched lol seen as I'm doing amazing thanks. My liver was nice and tiny.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
