baby food....question!

So I bought my first jars of baby food last night, in preparation for the pureed phase. Let me back up.....

I had my nutritional class was this week and a "bariatric class" that was pretty detailed about the different phases of appropriate foods. Baby food was mentioned. They said it was OK to eat, so long as you read the labels. In other words, no added sugar, and good Protein source. Which if you haven't already went shopping for baby food (for bariatric purposes) practically none of the baby food has a good source of Protein. The NUT did say that you could add Protein Powder to the baby food that is lacking.

Therefore, back to my baby food shopping extravaganza!

I purchased 4 different types of baby food. I was very careful to read each label. The picture attached was just one that I purchased. The others were similar as far as nutritional values. These were $1.00 each, btw.

Now, my thought process was this.... and this is where my question comes into play.

1. The NUT said that during the pureed/blended stage most people can only handle 2-4oz at one time. Therefore, I feel like this is pretty good bang for your buck. What do you all think?

2. Are there better options?

I believe it's ok to eat those if you can stomach the smell and/taste. From a convenience standpoint they seem dead easy and my RD told me it would be fine. And certainly, adding spices will help!

Here's a couple of quick fix options if you want to do semi-homemade purees. I have a hand blender/burr blender/stick blender or a mini food processor. I just heat the stuff up and then puree it with the stick blender, using broth to thin them out to the right texture. You can scale these up to make and freeze some!

They both make "about" 1/4 cup of puree give or take. :)

Chili with Beans

1 serving about 1/4-1/3c

1/8c prepared chili (I make my own low carb 2Alarm Chili and use a portion of it)

1/8c Trappey's Jalapeno Pinto Beans (drained and rinsed)

10g Isopure Unflavored Protein Powder

1 tbsp salsa

1 tsp sour cream

3.5g Benefiber (optional)

1/3oz cheddar cheese

134 cals; 14g protein; 6g fat; 5g carbs; 2g fiber; 3g net carbs

Creamy Alfredo chicken Puree

1 serving about 1/4-1/3c

1oz cooked boneless skinless rotisserie chicken

2tbsp grated parmesan cheese

2tbsp Lite Asiago Roman Alfredo Sauce (Classico)

6g Isopure Unflavored Protein powder

3.5g Benefiber (optional)

granulated garlic, pepper, salt, oregano, basil to taste

169 cals; 20g protein; 8g fat; 4g carbs; 2g fiber; 2g net carbs

The taste wasn't too bad. I'm sure with some seasoning it would be a lot better. Thank you so much for the recipes. I really do want to make some things for at home. The baby food would be more for on the go.

What's the actual point ? Takes a few mins to blend tuna salad chicken salad egg salad. And so on.... I'm just trying to figure out why baby food ? I bought it too but I don't know why I did. But it was a waste of my time lol.

On the go I put them in little containers. But let's be honest. On the go your not going to sit there in front of people eating baby food out of a jar are you lol ?

The difference between blending tuna, egg, or chicken salad is that baby food doesn't have to be refrigerated. And yes, I would eat this in public if I had to. Honestly, I don't care that much of what people might think for it to hinder my choices. I'm on the go a lot and I could store one or three of those jars in my purse for an easy grab. It would mainly be for those purposes.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

      Woohoo! I have 7 more days till surgery, So far I am already down a total of 20lbs since I started this journey.
