Why does everything taste bad?

Recommended Posts

Had surgery on Monday at 7:30. Was home by 2:00 pm on Monday and I pretty much slept the rest of the day. Didn’t drink much at all, was so out of it. Yesterday I felt so thirsty. I had mostly Water and some Jello stuff from my doctor which was okay. Had maybe 3 spoonfuls. Yesterday and today I have also tried a Protein Drink, a Cappuccino flavored Protein thing, broth w/ protein, and then just regular broth, and then broth strained from Soup (obviously super super, super small tastes. It sounds like a lot but the amount I tasted altogether prob isn’t even an ounce idk. I was using baby spoons) and it all just tastes freaking awful. Either too sweet or weird after tastes, idk. I just want to drink water.

After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Many undergo this change. For others it seems to affect their sense of smell.

I had the same issue with anything that wasn’t bland. Couldn’t do vanilla shakes ore even my fruity Vitamins mapped me gag. Fortunately I had unflavored Protein Powder and put it in a cup of milk with Decaf coffee and that’s helped for a few days. Vanilla Greek yogurt tastes horrible but plain was tolerable. I’m one week out and can do choc shakes and vitamins are doable.

When we lose weight, we breathe it out. It messes up our taste buds!

It's my first day of eating soft and all the food I liked before, I don't. Do most of you find it's short term? Over time do you like the taste of some foods even if they might not be the ones you liked before. Pretty much nothing tastes good and I was looking forward to eating but now it's just a chore. Maybe that is the secret to loosing 100 lbs?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
