Is there something wrong?

Recommended Posts

I’m 6 days out, but yesterday I ate more than I could since surgery.

I had a much of mug of broth, some jelly during the day, about 5 spoonfuls, and also tea and a bit of broth during the day.

The Soup I ate for dinner was the first time I finished a mug in one sitting. I’m not sure if you have mugs so I’ll attach a pic.

It seems like a lot but there was no discomfort. Would any of you eat that much at this stage?

I was so hungry yesterday and felt so weak, the food made me feel better.

Oh yes I didn't have any problems at all finishing all my broth even the day after surgery at the hospital I could easily finish everything and I was still hungry afterwards. I wouldn't be concerned, as long as your on liquids you might not get full but just wait until you start solid real food .I just started them this week and I Can barely finish a few ounces at a sitting.

I could eat a decent amount of broth during that stage, but my doc had me limit it to 4 oz. per hour. If your doc doesn't limit you, you should be fine.

I would suggest finding something besides the jelly, though. I know you're probably eating it because you're exhausted and the sugar gives you energy, but it's not a good idea to get into the habit of relying on sugar for energy. It creates this roller coaster effect with your blood sugar, and it will make you hungrier overall.

I'm 8 days out. After day 4 or so I could drink quite a bit of Water or broth in one sitting. The same isn't true for the thicker foods my plan allows (yogurt, cottage cheese, scrabbled eggs) so I've been doing those for meals instead of broth. For broth I've been going to Whole Foods and getting the broth from their market Soups, and giving them a once over with an immersion blender just incase there's anything chunky hiding in there. So much more satisfying than plain broth.

Ok, so directly after the surgery your tummy is a swollen banana shaped stomach and all that can squeeze through is liquid and it takes a long time. Then as time progresses and your healing process starts, the swelling begins to decrease. I think it takes like 6 weeks for the fully swelling to disappear. Anyway, the reason why you can slowly take in more is because the swelling decreases so the volume your new tummy can hold increases. But this is all with LIQUID. Liquid will always be easier to digest and broth will go through your stomach quickly.

When you start incorporating solid foods you will quickly see how limited your stomach is. 1/4 cup will be too much at first probably. It's all a healing process that for some can take 12 weeks. Just enjoy being able to drink your Soups and liquid with ease.

Good luck and enjoy this process when you can!!

Thank you all SO MUCH!

This website is so helpful - it means so much to be able to get the support through all of these questions that pop up.

By the way, I made a mistake in my signature, my surgery was 2 December. Everyday I’m feeling a bit better :)

Is this even true for the lite jelly? I really loved the break from broth and actually chewing :(

Check the sugar content. If it's got sugar in it, it's probably best to avoid it for now. Sorry - I know the liquid phase is really rough. I just don't want you to set yourself up with a bad habit from the start.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
