Does anyone get sleepy after having a protein shake?

Recommended Posts

A bit of an odd question, but does anyone else have problems staying up after having their shake? Pre-op, I never even had a supplement shake. So since February, I have tried many different types (meal replacements, whey, vegan), and it always ends with me feeling super drowsy. For the first month or two, sometimes I would actually need to have a nap right after my shake. Ten months later, I can stay awake, but I feel very lethargic and just sit there, like a lump! lol When I'm at work, perhaps it is because I am distracted, but I can still somewhat function. But at home, I just sit on my couch, and can't move for half an hour or so.

TMI: And often, I would have to go to the bathroom after having a shake, or at least I feel like I do...

I need to do some more testing, but I had tested my blood pressure, and it was pretty low after I had my shake (usually it's excellent).

Has anyone else experienced this?

Dehydration can cause drowsiness and it can also cause your blood pressure to drop. Here is a link to a 2012 thread that discussed the issue. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/211099-anyone-else-dealing-with-low-blood-pressure-post-surgery/

The issue might be an electrolyte imbalance. According to the internet:

Electrolytes are minerals in body fluids that contain an electrical charge. Sodium, Calcium, phosphate, carbonate, potassium, chloride and magnesium are the main electrolytes. Maintaining an appropriate electrolyte balance can improve muscle action, blood chemistry and other processes, according to MedlinePlus. However, when the amount of Water in the body changes, the levels of these electrolytes may become too high or too low. The specific symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance vary greatly depending upon which electrolyte is unbalanced, but may include thirst, weakness, drowsiness, sluggishness, fatigue, confusion, cramps, abnormal heart rhythm, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or seizures.

I don't drink shakes, but I get very sleepy after having Protein at all. Same with fat. My docs and NUT don't know why, but I feel much better when I eat mainly carbs (healthy ones, of course).

I am 8 years Post-Op and I get extremely tired anytime I eat Protein. I have never done the shakes because none of them agreed with me. I simply don't know what causes this and I have just gotten used to it at this point. I get my protein from veggies now as I have never been able to handle any type of meat without it getting stuck and causing extreme pain. It is just now worth the pain. I have had every scan and test to see if there was a blockage but nothing shows up. Baffling...

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
