Grocery / eating out expenses decrease significantly?

Recommended Posts

I know this might sound like a weird / crazy thing to consider, given the million other things we all think about when considering this surgery.... but I am a bit of a scrooge, and LOVE saving money. I think that one of the natural and AWESOME side effects of having this, is not only that my waistline will shrink...but my food expenses will as well. Has anyone experienced this? Since the biggest areas where I tend to "splurge" the most is eating out, I am guessing that this will save me a lot of money.

Can anyone attest to this? How has your budget been affected post-sleeve?

I’ve been spending about the same amount so far. What I don’t spend on crap food or eating out I spend on Protein supplements hopefully when I get to the solid food stage and can get my protein from fish and lean meat...my grocery bill will go down!

When you can eat less it show on the grocery bill. Eating at a restaurant, Sometimes I order a regular sized meal. (healthy choices) I eat the leftovers so I don't have to cook the next day or days.lol

If you are still feeding a family..You might not see a big change.

I guess that makes sense, since the list goen from high quantity, to high quality! I'll take it. :-)

My grocery bill for my family of 5 is down about $50/week. I think that's a combination of the way I meal plan and the surgery. When we go out to eat, I typically order something small or a regular meal will feed me 3 - 4 times. There's definitely some savings there!

Eating out- In my job we take guests out to dinner quite a bit. In the departmental budget for next year, I saw the manager decreasing the dining out amount by 20% with "forgetmenot has turned into a cheap dinner date" as the explanation for that line item. Keep in mind most of the reduction probably reflects the dessert and alcohol that I don't order anymore. I still order an appetizer and/or entree, with more than half of it packed up for another meal.

Groceries - I haven't seen a big drop because I am buying better quality foods. Grain fed beef, almond flour, Protein powder and the like.

For me, the grocery bill is about $20 less a week since surgery. My surgery was just over a year ago. I still drink 1/2 to 1of a Premier Protein shake a day, and a pack of 12 of those costs $17 at Sam's, so I spend an average of $25 a month on those. So, really not saving anything on groceries. Plus, I spend $30 a month on my Vitamins and I didn't have that expense prior to surgery.

We rarely go out to eat, pre-surgery maybe 6 times a year. Since my surgery a year ago, we've only gone out a couple of times.

I love saving money too, but I am actually spending a little more on the things I need now.

Yes!

I went out to lunch with a friend on Saturday. My lunch cost between $3 and $4, plus I took some of it home.

I'm single and worked long hours, so I used to eat out quite a bit, which can be expensive. But I was SO hungry that I NEEDED food IMMEDIATELY--no patience to wait while I prepared it. Now, in addition to not working, I'm never so dreadfully ravenous. I cook more often and fill freezer with 1/2 cup size containers of "leftovers". Only my pre-Thanksgiving grocery trip was over $50.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
