Tiredness from Lap Band

Recommended Posts

When I am on a diet and reduce my caloric intake I feel extremely tired. At times I just cannot think clearly. As soon as I eat something I feel better.

Will I still experience this tiredness if I have the surgery? Eatling less is something I can do but the tiredness worries me.

For myself the type of food I choose to eat makes a huge difference to my energy levels eg. eat a hamburger or chips and I have a quick burst of energy and then I am tired and hungry again an hour later, eat a couple of slices of wholemeal toast and a piece of fruit and I am fine for hours. I have only been banded about ten days ago and am finding myself full of energy even though I am eating so little compared to pre-banding (I am on mushies and Protein shakes).

I wonder if my tiredness is psychological due to the hunger I feel while dieting? The type of food really does not make a difference for me. I can feel so tired and week that I become dizzy. I am hoping this will not be a permanent thing if I have the surgery.

The tiredness when dieting often has more to do with the type of calorie than the lack of calories.

Low GI foods keep the blood sugars steady, where as higher GI foods (white starches, some fruits, sweets, sugars ect) send the blood sugar up, making you feel less tired for a while, and when the blood sugar comes back down (and it usually does so fairly quickly), you feel like crap again.

I would suggest that you have at least a few things to discuss in detail with the surgeon. As a psychologist myself I would not be sure that the tiredness has a psychological basis, I would tend to think that the answer lies in the types of foods you are eating. As Chickie above said, the Low GI foods are the way to go if you want to reduce the sugar highs and lows.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
