Drinking Lots of Alcohol

Recommended Posts

Like I said in a previous post, if I go to a restaurant I will eat a whole chicken. If I eat less I will still be hungry. I see other people who are full after a piece. This is what I want.

Well I think the bottom line would be this. You have to overcome your head problems. Justifying being an alcoholic would red flag me if I was a doctor.

You could get the band, and when you eat chicken you could only eat 1 piece. But the flip side?

You could go home and eat a gallon of ice cream and a whole slew of chips without batting an eye. Yup, you can.. even with the band!!

So you have to be able to make choices. The band helps as a tool.

But it sounds like you want it to be a magic wand, which I assure you.. it will not.

My step mother got drunk the end of May, she jumped out of her window. Her window was on the 30th floor of an apartment building.

She did what she wanted to do. She enjoyed her alcohol and she went flying, flying like a butterfly out her window.

She didn't care about anyone else but herself.

Oh yes she enjoyed her alcohol and I know that she enjoyed her flight!

She only cared about her alcohol not her daughter that she would leave devestated behind, or her friends and other family members.

Just like you she did what she wanted to do and she enjoyed it.

So go ahead and have the band and drink as much as you want. I've gotten drunk a few times in the past to years, and I've enjoyed it. I'm more sensitive now about alcolhol because I see how it hurts others so much. I am also more sensitive how weight effects others.

So you need to make this desision for yourself.

I am sure you are already affecting other peoples lives by your weight and your drinking.

You are aviously going to do just what you want to do. Just like my step mother did what she wanted to do.

The only thing that I can ask is that you think about how you are affecting other people who care about you. It does effect them even if you think it doesn't

I am a very heavy drinker. I probably drink at least 10 drinks of hard rum or whiskey each evening before bed. I do not drink wine or beer at all.

The last time I went on a diet I did not drink for 40 days so I know I can quit for at least a while. But once the diet was over, I went right back to drinking.

Every site I read says I should not have this surgery if I am drinking.

But what would be the problem if I started drinking lesser amounts a couple months after the surgery? I read that after the surgery I could get drunk faster, so lets say I only drank 4-5 drinks a day. Would that be so bad?

I know there are lots of calories in alcohol and nothing else. This I understand fully. But 5 shots of whiskey would have about 400 useless calories which really is not that much. Once I get down to my desired weight I should eat about 3000 calories so the alcohol is only taking about 12% of my calories.

Or is there something else I should be aware of besides calories?

And please, I am very serious about this and do not want to hear any "go to AA" comments because I enjoy drinking and own a bar so avoiding alcohol is pretty hard.

Calories in calories out - do you know what shape your liver is in and if they will so the surgery- between the liquor & fat - your liver could be in bad shape... Did you see Big Medicne - just being fat can give you chericoso (i can't spell but u know what i mean) - they might not so the surgery... 400 calories is 1/3 of my daily food intake on a 1200 calorie a day diet . Would rather eat that drink...

Good luck -

Just my 2 cents. Your not ready for the band. The band is only 1/3 of the weight loss journey, and clearly you are not ready to do the 2/3 needed for success. You don't want to lose weight for your health. Save your money...buy another bar/business. Don't waste your money, time or your friends or family time w/ a serious surgery. Eat...drink...and be merry!

Go ahead and get the band if you want to spend a lot of time puking your guts up. Someone with a band and impared judgement from being drunk is not a pretty thought. It is a recipe for disaster. Sounds like you have a pretty strong death wish already. The band might just help deliver that wish sooner rather than later.

Yup. I think we've got someone here who thought it would be cool to mess with a weight-loss board.

Let me clarify, it takes a lot of work to eat 5-6k calories..

well 10 drinks would be about 4k.... so drinking 4k and eating 1k wouldnt take work for an alcoholic.

Like I said in a previous post, if I go to a restaurant I will eat a whole chicken. If I eat less I will still be hungry. I see other people who are full after a piece. This is what I want.

Then start drinking things like Mudslides or a drink thats more filling since your body seems to need 6k calories

I can't say that I drink 10 drinks a day but I would consider myself a heavy drinker. Often times, I can drink a few beers and take quite a few tequila shots. I don't get any more buzzed with my weight loss. The downside is slower weight loss. I lose 1 lb a week. I probably would be at goal if I didn't drink so much. I've lost 65 lbs in 16 months. Just be aware of the downsize. Drinking is fine in moderation. Maybe you could cut your drinking in 1/2. That would be good. Good luck with your decision.

I am really suprised that people are more accepting of the drinking issue. If you're going as far as surgery to better your health I can't even imagine trashing another organ (liver) to feel a buzz.

Agreed.

And to suggest alternative, lower calorie drinks to an alcoholic troll seems kinda weird.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
