Feeling bad about my pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

I'm on day four of my Optifast, clear broth, raw veg. diet. This evening I ended up on the kitchen snacking on totally inappropriate foods. I am really not liking this diet.

I am thrilled to be getting the band. This is what have worked on for months! It's finally happening and I don't seem to be able to follow two weeks of a very simple diet. Although, if I didn't have very disordered eating I wouldn't have 125 lbs. to lose. ;)

I did recover somewhat by at least making a salad to take to work tomorrow. I am having a serious case of Last Supper Syndrome. I keep thinking of all the foods I 'should' have eaten.

Right I would love to have a salad right now. This other girl also said she can have healthy choice Soups. All I can have is liquids I wish.

my surgeon doesn/t require any special pre diet except no solids day before surgery, why is there so many different diets, he does require 2 weeks of liquids in post surgery though, does anybody have any suggestions on this. i have carnation instant breakfst sugar free, but is there anything else i can take?

In my seminar, one of the women asked if we'd be required to go on any special diets pre-op and we were told no. Just the usual pre-surgery no eating after a specific time.

If you go on a liquid diet fast for 1-2 weeks (and I have), the first thing you notice is the incredible sag you get within days. I might only have lost 2-3 pounds in that time, but my body looked and felt like I'd lost 10-15 lbs. Perhaps this liquid phase helps with the poofiness on the inside as well, making it easier for them to install the lap band.

All I know is, if they tell me liquids pre-op, then liquids it will be...even if I have to sew my lips shut. :wink2:

Two-weeks pre op liquid, and FOUR WEEKS post op for me! I'm beginning to think my surgeon is a sadist. :wink2:

I soooo thought about cheating last Saturday. I just wanted one last order of tuna sashimi and yellowtail sashimi before this four-week hell begins. Alas, I sucked it up and didn't do it. In hindsight, being basically pure Protein, it probably wouldn't have made any difference.

The only technical cheating I did was the other morning at work, I got extremely dizzy and confused. I figured it was low blood sugar, so I ate 2/3 of a regular sugar/fat Hunts snack Pack butterscotch pudding one of my coworkers had in the fridge. I felt normal in about 10 minutes. So maybe that was more therapy than cheating.

Starryeyed.

Don't sweat it. Just get back on track. The diet is no fun but it will pass. I just started my 2nd week of Mushies so I have not had much solid food since 9/8. Next Wed I will be back on solids. It is tough but you make it through it. Took about 5 days to get used to the liquid diet. Best of luck,

Greg

I am starting my 2 week pre-op this coming Monday. I was told it is to shrink the liver for the surgeon and also so you can get used to the liquid phase after the surgery.

All doctors are different on what they want for pre-op, it is strange, but just follow the instructions of the ones doing your surgery.

I was given a bunch of Optifast shakes to use, along with very unspecific instructions to have (any) Protein shakes and low-sodium (no chunks) cream Soups.

I am preparing myself that I will come back here on Monday and Tuesday, complaining that I can't do this, and I have a horrible headache.

I am really amazed that some people are unsure of what the pre/post diet are and why they are SO important!

Preop---- 2 weeks of high Protein, liquids(meal replacement, not just slimfast or carnation inst) is needed to decrease the size of the liver, reduce the fat around it. During surgery the have to work around the liver and they must be sure to have enough room and avoid injuring it.

Post op---2 weeks High Protein liquids--Banded area is sutured and those sutures need to HEAL. This diet allows that to happen.

Protein is important in the healing process, it help wounds/surgical sites to heal by increasing the bodys ability to build lean muscle.

Best of luck to all, I am currently in the middle of my required 6 month MD supervised diet and HOPE to be approved in late Feb 2010.

hi andy

i was never told of a pre opt diet, i was asked to lose 10 percent of my body weight before surgery, and to eat smaller portions, and yes i was told there was a 2 week post opt diet of liquid s ,so maybe i guess it depends on the sureons.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
